Options Explored • Microsoft Exchange: local & external hosting • GoogleApps: standard & government • Zimbra: local & external hosting • GOPRU (an ad hoc consortium of universities): four vendor options
Considerations • Safety and eDiscovery • Law, Rule and Regulation • Data • Penn State Infrastructure • Workarounds and Adaptations • Cost
Observations for faculty and staff • In the cloud: • “Free” cloud offerings fall short • For fee offerings very expensive • Locally hosted: • Both Exchange and Zimbra are viable solutions • Common good for basic service • Individual good for advanced services
Zimbra Pilot Feedback Summary • Zimbra was well received, no show-stoppers identified • Participants used: • mobile devices • native Zimbra clients on Macs and PCs • the web browser provided by the service • preferred client software such as Thunderbird on a Mac or PC • Most favorable impressions: • mobile devices • iCal, Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook • Least favorable: • Zimbra native client • Outlook reported as a very successful experience and easy to integrate for PC clients
