Timeline for Portuguese Exploration 1415- Crusading spirit-Ports seized Ceuta in North Africa This sparked the interest of the Portuguese King, Henry 1419-Henry built schools, gathered scientists, cartographers and builders- all in an attempt to improve exploration. Portuguese began sending annual expeditions to Africa 1441-Portugues reached Cape Verde- so what? Brought back cargo of black slaves—so what? Relate to the Renaissance 1471- landing on West African coast, ports eventually muscled in on gold trade 1487- Bartolomew Diaz rounded the Cape of Good Hope 1497-1499 Vasco da Gama rounded Africa- returned home 1498- Portuguese begin to muscle in on Muslim trade. 1502-1520 no Moluccan spices traveled Red Sea Portuguese carried ¼ of goods

Portuguese Imperialism • 1500 King Manual dispatched 13 ships that landed on the coast of Brazil. • Pedro Alvarez Cabral- then proceeded around the Cape to India (6) • At the point, every March ships were sent out and brought back spices • (Black Pepper, Nutmeg, Cloves) • Alfonso de Albuquerque crowned governor India • 1509- 1515 captured Malacca and continued to try to expand • As the Portuguese spread influence, they spread Christianity • “While Buddha came to China on white elephants, Christ was borne on cannon balls.”

Portuguese Imperialism • Portuguese pioneered sea travel • Prince Henry- they sought new route to India • Diaz and da Gama found route around Africa 1497 • Portuguese establishes trade empire in India • “If we take this trade of Malacca away from them, Cairo and Mecca will be entirely ruined, and Venice will receive no spiceries unless her merchants go to buy them in Portugal.” • “The cannonballs came like rain, and the noise of the cannon was as the noise of thunder in the heavens and the flashes of fire of their guns were like flashes of lightening in the sky. And the noise of their guns was that of groundnuts popping in the frying pan”

  13. Spain’s Fortunes • Spain was unified under Isabella and Ferdinand • They has just finished completing the Reconquista • Christopher Columbus sailed in August of 1492 and returned March of 1993. • Beginning of Spain’s influence on the Global Scene • What Columbus a hero or a Villian?

Spain Enters the race-game • 1492- Christopher Columbus • Initially sought the backing of the Portuguese • After being denied went to Spain • Spain had hoped to bypass the Italians • He was a deeply religious man- Granada was a sign to him • He was a very knowledgeable seaman- yet calculations were off • Sailed with 3 ships, Pinta, Nina, & Santa Maria • Left Aug 3rd arrived Oct 12th – 1st of 4 trips • Sparked a debate between Portugal and Spain • Alexander VI – set a line of demarcation • Established the Treaty of Tordesailles
