  5. A new metrical pattern: hendecasyllabic The metrical pattern for hendecasyllabic verse looks like this: • The majority of Catullus’ poetry is written in this meter • The name should be a clear indication that it is more important to think of this meter in terms of syllables rather than in terms of metrical feet. • Going back to our example we were working with before, the line would look like this completely scanned:

  6. YOUR NOTESHEET SHOULD NOW BE COMPLETE A new metrical pattern: hendecasyllabic PRAECEPTA: Using your text packet and working in pencil. Mark whether the syllables in these words are long or short. DO NOT attempt to MARK where the metrical FEET belong: • How many syllables occur in each line? You should get the same number for each line. ˉ ˉ ˉ ˘ ˘ ˉ ˘ ˉ ˉ ˘ ˘ Vīvāmus mea Lesbia, atque amēmus, rūmōrēsquesenumsevēriōrum ˉ ˉ ˉ ˘ ˘ ˉ ˘ ˉ ˉ ˘ ˘ 11 Hendec- = eleven (from Greek)
