  1. A poignant, elegiac novel.

  2. Private Peaceful Written by children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo, and winner of the Blue Peter Book Award in 2005, Private Peaceful is a powerful and extraordinarily moving insight into the horrors of war.

  3. The Blurb As young Thomas Peaceful looks over his childhood from the battlefields of the First World War, his memories are full of family life deep in the countryside. But the clock is ticking, and every moment Tommo spends remembering how things used to be, means another moment closer to something which will change his life forever.

  4. What does the title make you think of? How do you know the book is about war? What is the effect of the two yellow butterflies? What does elegiac mean? What does Poignant mean? What is your knowledge of World War one?

  5. World War 1 World War 1 broke out on 4th August 1914. The causes of WW1 are complicated and not one single nation can be blamed as the sole cause. However, Germany was blamed because they invaded Belgium despite vowing to protect them. Most people thought the war would be over by Christmas 1914 but it didn’t, it lasted until 1918. WW1 was a long and terrible war. Many many people died between 1914 and 11th November 1918. This is why we now have Remembrance Sunday (Poppy day) the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. They fought in horrific conditions. Somefamilies lost all the men in their family; fathers, sons, uncles.

  6. Private Peaceful Our focus this term is to read the novel and to look into depth at the Characters, plot and theme.
