The College Admissions Process • Applications available in Fall 2013, can begin Sept/Oct to fill out • Should be responsibility of student with assistance from parent or guardian • Always welcome to schedule an appointment with counselor to review details about the plans of your student
Suggestions for Selecting a College • Gather Information: web, handouts, guidance office, libraries, college fairs and representatives • Look at key factors: size, location, private vs. public, offered majors, cost • Review handout of excellent Ohio colleges
Suggestions for Selecting a College • Coaches may have leads on colleges that will offer Athletic Scholarships • Consider taking the two-year option • PSAT’s MyRoad Program • Ohio Board of Regents
Selecting a College Major • Personality Inventories; likes/dislikes • Collegeboard.com, go to the College Match Link • MyRoad Program through PSAT access code • Use College Exploration Room at SFDHS
Selecting a College Major • Examine what academic courses you enjoy…is there a similar career? • Talk with high school teachers and/or college professors • Utilize Career Planning office at your chosen school • Be Patient!!! A career and major often gels later with maturity and some college experience.
Getting the Most out of a College Visit • Check visit days on the school website, respond to invites from the school • Try to visit when classes are in session, do an overnight! • Bring a list of questions • Arrange a meeting with a department chair of a major that interests you
Admissions Interview Tips • Most do not require a formal interview • Dress appropriately, posture, eye contact, smile! • Review typical questions asked and be prepared • Follow up with a hand-written Thank You note
Creating a résumé • Visit the guidance website for a résumé template • Highlight academic and athletic achievements and service • Personalize to reflect attributes and character
Writing a college application essay • Work on a few drafts over the summer! Visit the guidance website for possible tips • Have an English teacher proofread and/or utilize the Writing Center • Tips from collegeboard.com
Recommendation Letters • Often needed for college applications and scholarships • Give recommender at least a 2 week time frame to complete • Select people that know you well • Complete Senior Survey and Parent Brag Sheet on time • Again, give recommender at least a 2 week time frame to complete
Sources for Financial Aid • Federal Aid; file FAFSA after January 1, 2014, based on need, can use FAFSA4caster now! • State Aid; Ohio Board of Regents • Private sources for Aid • Use online scholarship sites; fastweb.com • Avoid Scams
