Lessons • Business process re-engineering • Project acts as a catalyst for change • Vision and reality • Focus on human communication as well as technical interoperability • Multidisciplinary team approach • Legal issues • Data protection, ownership and persistence of metadata • Legal study addressing these issues

Lessons General • Doing a few things well is better than doing many things superficially • National differences in funding and data rules create a problem for UK-wide interoperability • Technical interoperability cannot take place without institutional interoperability • Having real learners to support is an advantage
