Project Work and the CPSC Library Information Systems 101: Non-Fiction Text
Melvil Dewey In the 1870’s, Melville Dewey created a system to organize and categorize non-fiction books. Books were then labeled with this number and a card was made for every title. These cards were stored in a card catalog, where people would go and look for books.
Catalogs We still label our books with their Dewey Decimal Call Numbers, but instead of a card catalog, most libraries use a computer based catalog system, where people can search the collection on a computer.
The Dewey Decimal System • 000 Generalities • 100 Philosophy & Psychology • 200 Religion • 300 Social Sciences • 400 Language • 500 Natural Sciences • 600 Technology • 700 Artistic Stuff • 800 Literature • 900 Geography & History Check Out the Melvil Dewey Rap!
