Session Challenge______________________

  3. Why do we have Principles? “To create a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.” -Google Dictionary

  4. Why do we do selection? • Create the fastest crew/win • Reinforce Team/Club/PSO/NSO Values and Principles • Increase stimulation within training environment • Practice racing • Show progress/regression • Club/equipment capacity issues

  5. HOW DO WE GET GOOD AT SELECTION? http://isucceedbook.com/success-principles-repetition-is-the-mother-of-learning/

  6. How to create a great selection STEP 1- Understand the value of excellent communication: • START COMMUNICATING BEFORE YOU COMMUNICATE • COMMUNICATE A.S.A.P. • COMMUNICATE MORE • COMMUNICATE CLEARER • COMMUNICATE WITH PURPOSE • COMMUNICATE WITH BELIEF • COMMUNICATE WITH INTEGRITY • COMMUNICATE WITH EVERYONE

  7. Selection Principles • Objectivity - Is there any other way to interpret the data/results? • Clarity - Will all stakeholders be able to explain the process back to you? • Validity - Are you measuring what you think you are measuring? • Reliability - Does it hold up in a number of ways/situations • Economy - How much time and money will it take to accomplish? -Dr. Volker Nolte

  8. HOW TO CONTINUED: COMMUNICATE ______________________ • Purpose for Selection • Goals for the selection • Who is eligible • Who has authority - Final Say • What are the Criteria • Describe how you will communicate the results • Exceptional Circumstance Provisions • Appeal Procedure http://www.sportlaw.ca/?s=selection

  9. Hot Tips: • Work towards a selection that does not create a surprise result • Understand your integrity is on the line and how that can affect your coaching effectiveness in the future • Act in a respectful way - you may not know how hard someone has worked to then not be selected • If you make a mistake admit it and take full ownership • Understand that it is nearly impossible to create a perfectly objective selection • Remind the athletes that the best are able to rise above and are accountable for their actions • Constant reminders that you do not want to be on the bubble as you do not want to be caught having to deal with any subjectivity • Reduce as many variables as possible

  10. Circle the wagons • Did we meet your expectations? • What did you learn? • FEEDBACK-

  11. Questions?
