  1. Essential fertilizer data and structure for country and cross-country analysis DominicBallayan

  2. OVERVIEW • Fertilizers: organic, inorganic or mineral • Mineral fertilizers contribute over half of all plant nutrients • Based on FAO Report amount will increase to about 80% in 2050 • Organic and other sources provide the rest

  3. FAO Fertilizer Database • Contains details on mineral fertilizers • Covers data on production, trade and consumption for about 200 countries in term of nutrients and product

  4. FAO Fertilizer Database • Time series data up-dated annually • Data disseminated through the FAO Statistical Yearbook and the Internet at:http://faostat.fao.org/site/575/default.aspx • Units of measurement: metric tons of plant nutrients: N, P205, K20

  5. FAO Fertilizer Data Sources • Main source of data is the FAO fertilizer questionnaires • Additional sources: • national statistical publications • Internet websites and country trade data • United Nations Statistics Division COM Trade database http://comtrade.un.org

  6. FAO Fertilizer Data Sources • Additional sources: • country project reports • custom departments and industry experts • studies available in other FAO Divisions • economic journals

  7. FAO Fertilizer Data Collection Methodology • The new fertilizer questionnaire: • sent to all countries of the world • cover total production, imports and exports, for fertilizer or non-fertilizer use • Harmonized System (HS) • Level of aggregations( physical and monetary terms) • Fertilizer Resource Utility Accounts-an input-output relationship

  8. Fertilizer use by crop (FUBC)-Users needs • assess country requirements • fixing targets for crop production • supporting research: • inter-country • soil fertility • food insecurity • environment protection

  9. Fertilizer use by crop (FUBC)-Source of data collection • FAO questionnaires sent to member countries • FAO country studies on FUBC • The International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA)

  10. Other Sources • International Centre for Soil Fertility and Agricultural Development (IFDC) • Phosphate and Potash Institute (PPI) • International Potash Institute (IPI) • World Phosphate Institute (IMPHOS)

  11. Fertilizer use by crop (FUBC)-data published • cover area fertilized, application rates, total nutrient used, yield, etc,for individual crops • The 5th edition of the ‘Fertilizer use by crop’ (FAO/IFA/IFDC/IPI/PPI, 2002) latest published • individual booklets for 21 countries representing five regions

  12. Link between PIEC and (FUBC) questionnaires • FAO fertilizer product tree concept • Compatibility between the questionnaires • Compatibility with the HS coding system • Validity of the conversion factors • International comparability

  13. Inter-Country Comparison

  14. Inter-Country Comparison

  15. SUMMARY • Basic data for FSUA • Basic data for FUBC • Linking FRUA with FUBC • Integration of EU data with World fertilizer data

  16. SUMMARY • Harmonization of EUROSTAT and FAO data collection methodology • Data integration into common format
