  2. Sustainable vs. non-sustainable • Sustainable = do not cut down forests to build palm oil plantations. • Non-sustainable = cuts down the forest to farm palm oil

  3. In 2014, the Orangutan Conservancy believes there are only about 40,000 orangutans remaining in Borneo and  Sumatra. Shockingly, the number was about 60,000 as recent as a decade ago.

  4. Orangutans • Many experts estimate orangutans could be extinct in the wild in less than 25 years. • Orangutans have lost well over 80% of their habitat in the last 20 years, and an estimated one-third of the wild population died during the fires of 1997-98.

Orangutans • Orangutans are only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. • Orangutans give birth once every 6-10 years, the longest interbirth • interval of any mammal, resulting in a slow reproductive rate. • After logging rainforest habitat, palm oil companies often use uncontrolled burning to clear the land or peat swamp. • In 1997-98 a devastating fire killed almost 8,000 orangutans.

  6. Other animals in Borneo • Borneo has 222 species of mammals, 420 birds, 180 reptiles, 150 amphibians, 394 fish, and 15,000 plants.  Borneo is home to orangutans, elephants, clouded leopards, proboscis monkeys, sun bears, and hornbills.

  7. Threats • The main threats in 2014 to the survival of orangutans • Local people – land being taken away • Loss of habitat through deforestation • Illegal hunting • Illegal pet trade • Palm oil

What is palm oil? • It is a form of edible vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the African oil palm tree. • African oil palms originated in West Africa, but can flourish wherever heat and rainfall are abundant. • Currently the majority of all palm oil is grown and produced in Borneo and Sumatra. • Palm oil is the most widely produced edible oil. • Over 44 million metric tons are produced in Indonesia and Malaysia per year (USDA, 2011). • You probably eat and use palm oil every day. It is found in many foods, cosmetics and bath products.

  10. Palm oil that is non-sustainable • Tear down forests to clear land. • Then it is burned to clear any remains left. • The soil is only good for 2-3 uses.

  11. Palm oil in ½ our products • Palm oil is an edible plant oil which has become a common ingredient in many consumer products. Today, around 50 percent of the goods we use every day contain palm oil, from processed foods to candles, grooming products and “biofuels”.

How you can help! • Tell others about the problem. • Call on your political representatives to advocate the mandatory labeling of palm oil. • Do not buy products containing palm oil but make sure that your boycott sends a clear message by letting manufacturers and your elected representatives know why you are not buying them. • Demand the sources of palm oil in all consumer products. • The spread of palm oil plantations must be stopped. You can make a difference as a consumer by making your voice heard. • Demand 100% deforestation-free and product labeling. Your choices can change the world!
