Businesses have an environmental impact on: • Pressure groups • Friends of the Earth • Greenpeace • Customers • Disposing of rubbish • recycling • Local Community • Clean living environment • Road/industrial noise • Government • Environmental polices • Environmental groups • Laws and regulations • Taxation issues

Air Local Authorities have to carry out a “Review and Assessment” of their local air quality, especially with industry and transport. • Air pollution: • Factories • Chimneys • Transport • Fires Property rights of air is difficult to prove: this shows pollution form a factory. If the home owners air is polluted thatn the factory is liable.

  5. Noise Environmental Health investigate complaints regarding noise levels. Noise Act 1996 – night time noise £100 fixed penalty • Noise pollution: • Neighbours • Industry • Roads • Pets • Alarms • Loudspeakers • Construction sites • Sound levels in decibels: • Boiling kettle at 0.5m – 50d • Vacuum cleaner at 3m – 70d • Lawnmower operating – 90d • Pneumatic drill at 5m – 100d • Disco at 1m from amps – 120d

Water Water pollution is investigated and traced back to its origin. • Water pollution: • Rivers • Lakes • Bathing waters • Drinking water • If guilty of water pollution: • Fines • Court cases • Pay for analysis costs • Pay for clean up operation • Pay any compensation Drinking water inspectorate: measure water against set standards, takes regular samples and deals with complaints.

  7. Waste • Types of waste: • Household waste white goods • Vehicles • Industrial waste • Non degradable goods • Degradable waste Recycling: All local authorities waste disposal sites must have recycling skips by law Fly tipping: illegal dumping of waste. Fined and told to clean up site
