Welcome Chris Husbands Director
The wider context London schools London teachers and leaders IOE White Paper
Some underlying drivers in the White Paper A focus on the quality of teaching A movement towards a school-led education system
Moving forward Alison Kitson Director of Initial Teacher Education
Professional learning and development Initial teacher education Career-long professional learning and development
What is not fixed yet? Future funding mechanisms Recruitment of teachers Regulations and standards Teaching Schools and University Training Schools
Some principles for moving forward Improved outcomes for children and young people should drive the education and development of all education professionals. Educational professionals in London need to be critical thinkers, creative and responsive. Economies of scale, affordability and added value are essential. More flexible and innovative approaches to Initial Teacher Education – which ensure adequate teacher supply – are needed. Reciprocal, strong relationships between schools, clusters and the IOE should be nurtured and developed. Professional learning and development should be career-long.
Where next? Vivienne Porritt Executive Director, London Centre for Leadership in Learning
Consider governance based approaches Possible frameworks for relationships with schools Develop existing relationships and models further Envisage the development of locally-based school networks collaborating over ITE/CPD/leadership development Work through what might be hub schools across the capital Consider alternative professional models – for example, learning from medicine
