Child Safety Monitoring System Jessica Frey Emily Hornbeck
Motivation • 56,000 Children Injured Every Day • 22,000 Children Die Every Year as a Result of Injury • 90% of Unintentional Injuries that Occur in the Home are Preventable • $347 Billion Spent on Healthcare Due to Childhood Injuries Each Year
The home is one of the most common places for childhood injury! • Water – Kitchen, Bathroom, Swimming Pool • Flames or Heat – Kitchen, Bathroom, Utility Rooms • Toxic Agents – Kitchen, Bathroom, Garage • Falling - Stairwells
Objectives • Create a Warning System to Alert Parents when Children are Entering Dangerous Areas of the Home • Device can Distinguish Between a Child and an Adult • Zones can be Designated as High, Medium, or Low Risk • Quick Response Time and Minimal Amount of False Alarms
BasicX-24 Microcontroller • Simple, Straightforward Language • Easy Debugging • 8 Independent 10-bit Analog to Digital Converters • Sine Wave Generator for Alarm
Three Main Scenarios • Adult Crossing Top Sensor First Wait for Adult to Pass; No Alarm • Adult Crossing Bottom Sensor First Determine an Adult; No Alarm • Child Crossing Bottom Sensor Determine a Child; Alarm
FreqOut Function • Generates 2 Output Frequencies that Mix to Form a Chord-like Sound for a Specified Time • High Risk Zone -Mix 3500Hz and 7000Hz for 8 seconds • Medium Risk Zone -Mix 3000Hz and 6000Hz for 6 seconds • Low Risk Zone -Mix 2500Hz and 5000Hz for 4 seconds • Output Frequencies to a 4 Ohm Speaker
Testing • Collected Two Sets of Data • No Crossings • Crossings -Adult Crossing High Sensor First -Adult Crossing Low Sensor First -Baby Crossing • Tested High, Medium, and Low Settings
Results From No Crossings 30 one minute trials with no crossings were tested A+ A- % error = errors * 100% total trials A+ = Alarm =3.33% error A- = No Alarm
Results for Sensor Crossings 15 trials for each main crossing scenario A+ False Alarms: A+ for Adult Crossings A- for Baby Crossings A- Adult Crossing Bottom Adult Crossing Top Baby Crossing error%=False Alarms*100% Total Trials = 0% error A+ = Alarm A- = No Alarm
Results of Risk Settings 10 trials for each setting were tested for correct duration and frequency output N R High Medium Low 0% error for each setting N = Number of Trials R = Number of Correct Results
It Worked!!! • Ability to Distinguish Between Children and Adults • Few False Alarms • Correct Alarm Outputs for the Chosen Risk Settings • Quick Response Time
Benefits • Unobtrusive • Settings can be Altered at Any Time by the Parent • Easily Enabled/Disabled with Power Switch • Helps Parents Keep an Extra “Eye” on their Children
Commercialism • Expand Design to Include Cabinets, Drawers, etc. • Implement Alarm into a Home Speaker System • Use Computer Interface to Replace Control Switch Box
