Ocean Remote Sensing Issues: IOGOOS MeetingGrand Bay, MauritiusNovember 4-9, 2002Report to IOCCG by Mervyn J Lynch Curtin University Perth, Western Australia AUSTRALIA
• Don’t duplicate what is already being undertaken by others •Build linkages to like programs that operate elsewhere
Issues • Data exchange eg TM, ETM, SPOT data – problem? • High spatial and spectral resolution data are expensive on scale of IO coastal zone • What are the choices / preference for satellite data sources? • Hardware and software needs of users • Climate group needs (we think) are generally well met by existing data centers (eg scatterometers / altimeters/ SST (?))
Issues (continued) • Linkage between climate group program and extension to the coastal ecosystem management scale • Understanding of physical forcing of biogeochemical variables • How do we utilize / integrate remotely sensed products into such programs?
Science Issues • Coastal waters (Case 2) emphasis – algorithms need more work in high sediment regions, shallow waters • Compliance with standards and protocols on data products and measurements • Change detection (mitigation/ degradation) is a priority and implies a focus on accurate products and QC / QA
Planned Actions #1 Compile a resources directory on satellites and their products appropriate to ocean research including:- product descriptors- accuracy- spatial and temporal resolution- availability (real time, delayed)
#2 Compile an Inventory of Research & Capacity Building Facilities of IO Regional Centers • CB facilities / lecture rooms etc • CB facilities / computing laboratories • Wet laboratories (eg HPLC) • Instrumentation calibration / validation • Cruise capability • Staff /expertise / specialization • DB data collection & data archive
#3 Capacity Building Needs Science of remote sensing / understanding of products and limitations • Interpretation of products • Training / software and application - Assimilation of RS data into ecosystem models - RS Capacity Building applications – address these using case studies
Capacity Building Needs (cont) • Scatterometry / surface winds • Altimetry /surface currents / limitations • Inshore currents / feature tracking • SST / frontal detection • Ocean color products (Chl a, suspended sediments, dissolved organics, water optical attenuation, primary production) • Processing data from new satellites eg (MODIS/MERIS/IRS) - consistency • New products
#4 Ocean Information Technology (OIT) • Work with the Climate and Coastal groups toward identification of acceptable OIT system • Initiate evaluation of OIT system for RS support of IOGOOS programs
Specific Areas of Focus • Fisheries applications (prawning) • Ecosystem status and management • Soil erosion / sediment transport • Establishment of regional reference sites
Pacific Rim Cruise ? •Training in in situ sampling and measurement protocols (reference sites emphasis) • Training in the interpretation of satellite data products • Training in regional applications of data
2003 Activities • Fiji meeting to be relocated to Brisbane May / June 2003. Finances yet to be resolved! • IOGOOS follow-up planning meeting tentatively scheduled by IOC for Hyderabad in June /July 2003. Dialogue continuing with with Dr Radakrishnan, INCOIS and Chair IOGOOS.
Initial IOCCG / IOGOOS Capacity Building Network and Training Centres in the Indian Ocean • Dr Shailesh Nayak, ISRO, India • Dr Nasser Zaker, Iran • Dr Frank Shillington, Uni Cape Town, South Africa • Assoc Prof M Lynch, Perth, Australia • ? ,IRD, Reunion • ?, Singapore • others ?
