Tough It Out Real Self Performer Self • Emotional Base • Who we are based on • Morals • Standards • Parental upbringing • Background • Acquired through competitive exposure and training • Performance problems are generally traced to a weakened Real Self, an underdeveloped Performance Self, or a combination of the two
Why Can’t I Tough It Out? • Too much parental stress has weakened your real self • Parents who push to hard • Parents who live out their dreams through there kids • Parents who withdraw love and affection • Athlete have less flexibility, responsiveness, and resiliency • Ability to respond is weakened • Excuses making, temper tantrums, and choking happen • What would you do?
Why Can’t I Tough It Out? • Too much stress in the form of unfulfilled basic needs • Parents and coaches who fail to meet needs of saftey, security, love undermine the toughening process • These are strong sources of stress • The stakes are to high to risk
Why Can’t I Tough It Out? • Too little stress weakens the athlete • Parents, coaches, and communities that cater or coddle the athlete • Affluence can equal mental weakness • To get rid of • Risk more • Put it on the line more • Take hits emotionally • No playing it safe • No running away • No hiding • Face the heat
Performer Self • If your real self is not the problem than the performer self is • Poor thinking skills: The inability to trigger emotions through disciplined thinking • Poor imagery skills: “….” Through Imagery • Poor acting skills: “….” Disciplined acting through the body
Performer Self • Athletes who have not learned to think tough, and act tough can’t perform when adversity strikes
