Understanding Cardiac & Smooth Muscle Similarities and Differences

Explore the similarities and differences between cardiac and smooth muscle types, including their elasticity, Ca2+ dependent contraction, and actin/myosin composition. Learn about the characteristics of cardiac muscle as striated and involuntary, and where smooth muscle is found in the body. Discover the differences in actin content between smooth and skeletal muscle, with insights into filament composition.

  1. MUSCULAR SYSTEMCardiac & Smooth Muscle

  2. Cardiac & Smooth Muscle • Similarities: • Elasticity • Ca2+ dependent contraction • Actin/Myosin

  3. Cardiac Muscle • Striated Muscle • Involuntary

  4. Smooth Muscle • Found lining ALL hollow internal organs except the heart and several other additional places!

  5. Smooth Muscle • Much more ACTIN present than in Skeletal muscle. • Skeletal  2 thin filaments for every thick filament • Smooth  15 thin filaments for every thick filament !
