  1. The Muscular System • The human body has over 600 muscles! • Functions: • Allows movement (both conscious and unconscious, voluntary and involuntary) • Posture • Essential bodily functions

  2. Types of Muscle • Muscles can be classified into three main groups: • Smooth muscle • Cardiac muscle • Skeletal muscle

  3. Smooth Muscle • You have no voluntary control over smooth muscle • It is found in various organs (the stomach, for example) • It contracts rythmically and fatigues very slowly

  4. Cardiac Muscle • Is found only in the heart • Is also involuntary • Very slow to fatigue • Contracts and relaxes rhythmically to force blood around the body

  5. Skeletal Muscle • Attaches to the skeleton • Allows movement • Has a stripy appearance • Is voluntarily controlled

  6. Major Skeletal Muscles • The muscles of the body are named in a descriptive way, normally in Latin. Learning some of the terms will help you identify the muscles. • Muscles are normally referred to in major groupings (ie: the quads), but it’s important to know the major muscles in each group too.

  7. On the next two slides are some unlabelled worksheets. • Use the links on our class website to correctly identify all the muscles.
