Overview • 10 sections of ALEKS pilot and 10 sections of MML pilot • Common syllabus for ALEKS cohort • Common syllabus for MML cohort • Course material delivered primarily through the software • All sections meet 75 min/wk in regular classroom and 75 min/wk in math lab • Class meetings used to address difficult course topics, answer questions, allow students to work collaboratively, etc.) • Lab meetings used to provide students with individual assistance as they are learning • Students work at own pace (a minimum pace is enforced for ALEKS students through Intermediate Objectives) • Students may work outside of class using any computer with internet access

Overview, cont. • If ALEKS course, you may move the student to the next course through your ALEKS account • Instructions for doing this will be posted on the developmental math website soon • Instructors teaching both pilot and non-pilot (traditional) courses will give the same course midterm and final exam to both groups of students

7. MML Course Logistics • Day 1 • Instructor reviews syllabus with class and gives pacing guide to students • If lab meeting, students will have an MML orientation by Gene O’Brien, create their MML accounts, and begin working • A student begins by logging in to their MML account and clicking on the course name

8. To proceed, the student will click the “Pre-tests & Exit Tests” button in the left panel

9. Next, the student must click on the first chapter pre-test

The first pre-test will test the student’s knowledge of the concepts in the first chapter, and create the student’s chapter homework assignments accordingly • After completing the pre-test, the student will be shown a performance summary and a list of chapter homework assignments • Each homework assignment must be completed with a minimum grade of 90% in order for the student to be eligible to take the chapter exit test

11. MML will verify that the student has achieved a minimum of 90% on all chapter homework before opening the exit test for the student • Exit tests are untimed, but must be done in one sitting; if a student logs out prematurely, he/she must start the test again

A student may take an exit test many times if necessary, as a minimum score of 85% is needed to proceed to the next chapter (MML will not grant access to the next chapter pre-test until this happens) … … 90% or better on all HW 85% or better on Exit Test 90% or better on all HW 85% or better on Exit Test

Midterm Exam • The midterm exam should be given once the appropriate exit test has been successfully completed: • MAT091  Chapter 2 Exit Test • MAT092  Chapter 6 Exit Test • MAT094  Chapter 3 Exit Test • Midterm exams are graded by rubric and must be submitted to the math lab after they are graded • The student must pass the midterm exam with at least a 70% to continue in the course; if the student does not achieve this on the first attempt, the instructor should review the missed items with the student before allowing a retake. This information is also contained in the course syllabus and in the pacing guide

14. Final Exam • The final exam may be given once all exit tests have been successfully completed. • Final exams are graded by rubric and must be submitted to the math lab after they are graded • The student must pass the final exam with at least a 70% to earn a C or better in the course; if the student does not achieve this on the first attempt, the instructor should review the missed items with the student before allowing a retake.

15. MyMathLab Course Grading • Homework (MML) 15% • Exit Tests (MML) 15% • Attendance 10% • Midterm Exam (on paper) 30% • Final Exam (on paper) 30% MML automatically records homework and exit test grades in gradebook, and counts only the highest score Total attendance points earned divided by 150, as a percentage (see syllabus for further details)

16. ALEKS Course Logistics • Day 1 • Instructor reviews syllabus with class and gives quiz schedule to students • If lab meeting, students will have an ALEKS orientation from Chris Hyde, create their ALEKS accounts, and begin working • A student begins by completing a brief tutorial followed by a longer initial assessment • It is critical that the student does not receive assistance of any kind on the initial assessment

17. Following the initial assessment, ALEKS will create the student’s individualized “pie”

18. The student will begin working by clicking on the pie slice corresponding to the first “module” on the quiz schedule: In MAT091, students begin with the “Whole Numbers” slice

Once the student has answered some questions in the appropriate pie slice, ALEKS will use a dotted white line to indicate how close the student is to completing the current module: Once the area is filled in (dark green) to the dotted white line, the student will have completed the current module

20. Each module is due on the Monday of the week of the quiz; quizzes are given during that week’s classroom meeting

21. Accessing Quizzes • Quizzes are printed from your ALEKS instructor account 1. Click the “Quizzes” tab

Final Exam • The final exam may be given once all quizzes have been successfully completed and the ALEKS pie is at least 95% complete. • Final exams are graded by rubric and must be submitted to the math lab after they are graded. • The student must pass the final exam with at least a 70% to earn a C or better in the course; if the student does not achieve this on the first attempt, the instructor should review the missed items with the student before allowing a retake. This pie is 46/133 = 34.6% complete

26.
