  5. CONCEPT UNITS 1.Biographies & autobiographies purpose, elements, great vs mediocre pieces 2.Literature text: Friedrich by Hans Peter Richter themes, main characters plot, historical background, purpose 3. Short stories elements, reading & writing

  6. PAPER 1 • Part 1: Situational Writing • brainstorm and cover the format of as many text types as possible • recipes, e-mail, journal entries, reports, letters of complaint, friendly letters, notices etc

  7. Part 2: Continuous Writing • practice helps • plan story…Conflict, Intro, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution/Conclusion • choose question wisely (between picture and given scenario) • stay focused; elaborate on (compulsory) points • know how things are done – making a police report, what to do in a traffic accident etc…) • If possible – encourage child to write for you • Suggest topics for narratives, descriptive pieces • - a typical recess - interesting observations on way to school etc • Give constructive comments, praise; show interest

CLOZE • tests comprehension & vocabulary • only 1 word per blank • read at least thrice • highlight anaphoric (before blank) and • cataphoric (after blank) clues • check grammatical structure & form (tense, verb, adjective, noun, preposition etc…) • always check suitability of chosen word – select the MOST appropriate word

  10. COMPREHENSION • annotate (questions about text, author & self) • read passage carefully at least thrice • highlight key words in text & questions • answer in complete & concise sentences • take note of common errors • reading regularly (different text types) helps

  11. LISTENING COMPREHENSION • listen to the news / radio (keep up with current affairs) • watch documentaries - animals, travel, cultures, • food etc… (increase general knowledge) • ask children questions to inculcate habit of • listening more carefully & check on their understanding

Reading Aloud • practice at home required (e.g. record reading) • read aloud daily or on alternate days (5 to 10 min each) • enunciation & expressiveness • PSLE booklet, excerpts from storybooks (dialogue) ... • Picture Discussion (resource-PSLE Booklet) • describe & infer systematically • give opinion wherever possible • elaborate wherever necessary (fluency & clarity) • practise whenever opportunity arises • Conversation • find as many topics for discussions (eg. hobbies, everyday experiences etc.) as possible • fluency & clarity • practise whenever opportunity arises ORAL

  13. PREPARATION for DSA • Oral presentation components in Terms 1 & 2 • Supplementary lessons during June hols – interview skills • Pupils have to think through & prepare to talk about themselves, their interests, why they have chosen the school etc…

  15. Do try to… • check regularly/occasionally on your child’s HW, progress & work/study habits • incorporate practices suggested, such as reading aloud at home • deal with anxieties • show interest; chat with your child regularly
