Body Image: the way you see your body Can be influenced by friends, family and the media Weight Control: reaching the desired weight and then are able to maintain that weight Appropriate Weight: reaching the weight that is best for a person based on sex, age, body type
Eating Disorders • Extreme and damaging eating behaviors that can lead to sickness and even death • Anorexia Nervosa: self-starvation leading to extreme weight loss • Bulimia: people repeatedly eat large amounts of food & then try to get rid of the food they have eaten (Binge and Purge) • Binge eating (compulsive overeating): eating large quantities of food repeatedly
Anorexia • Reasons: • Pressure, high expectations, the need to achieve or the need to be popular • Have an irrational fear of becoming obese • Damage: • Malnutrition: condition in which the body doesn’t get the nutrients it needs to grow and function properly • Can lead to death
Bulimia • Reasons • Need to control their bodies • Force themselves to get rid of food • Vomit • Take laxatives • Damage • Stomach acid can damage teeth and injure the mouth and throat • Starvation can cause damage to the heart • Overeating can cause stomach to enlarge • Vomiting can cause stomach to rupture • Laxatives abuse can cause damage the kidneys • Serious dehydration
Compulsive Overeating • Reasons: Boredom, stress & habits • Damage • Can lead to being overweight or obesity • Overweight: more than the desired weight for sex, height and frame size • Obesity: having to much body fat • 20% more than the desired weight • 30% body fat • Excessive body fat puts a strain on heart and lungs, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, & heart disease • Low self-esteem, psychological & social problems • Factors that contribute to obesity • 1) inherited • 2) overeating • 3) lack of physical activity • 4) individual body metabolism
Helping Someone w/ an Eating Disorder • Convince the person to get help • Tell an adult • Get professional help • Encourage the person to join a support group • Recommend a follow-up
