1. Brookwood High School • Special Education Department • Chairperson: Linda Breedlove • Resource program: serves approximately 300 students • Self-contained programs: • Autism- Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 • Moderate ID • Mild ID

2. Case Managers • Each student is assigned a case manager who normally works with that student for the entire time that the student is at BHS. • Some of the case manager’s duties include: • working with the student on course selection • 3 year reevaluations • yearly IEP • completion of graduation checklists • parent contact for informational purposes • checking student progress in all classes

3. IEP Service Time • Students may receive service hours through resource and co-taught classes depending upon their area of disability.

4. Graduation Requirements • New Graduation Requirements beginning 2008-2009 • English/Language Arts 4 units • Mathematics 4 units* • Science 4 units • Social Studies 3 units • Career/Tech, Foreign Language, • and/or Fine Arts 3 units • Health and PE 1 unit • Additional Electives 4 units • Total Units 23 units

5. Graduation Requirements • Foreign language is not required for a diploma, but students planning to pursue postsecondary education at a comprehensive or research university will be required to take at least 2 years of a single foreign language. Three years is required by some universities. • Students planning to attend a 2 year post secondary school, such as Perimeter, must take 2 years of foreign language. This is not required for entrance into a technical school. • Students must also pass the 10th grade Gateway Exam, the Ga. High School Writing Test, and participate in End of Course Tests for selected courses. Ga. High School Graduation Test is no longer required.

7. Special EducationCourse Descriptions • Study Skills : • designed to teach basic study skills which students can use in all of their classes • lessons will be presented daily • tutorial time is also a part of each period • Students may come to a Study Skills class during their academic classes to have tests or assignments read to them or to receive individual help on class work. • Organizational and time management skills are emphasized.

8. Special Education Course Descriptions • Affective Skills • designed to improve the student's social and study skills. • done through group discussions, written materials, activities, and games. • Decision Making, Peer Pressure, Communication Skills, Conflict Resolution and Self-Esteem are some examples of Social Skills topics that will be used in class. • Study Skills will focus on Organization, Homework/Classwork completion, Time Management and Current Events. • All topics will be selected by the teacher according to the needs of the class. 70% of the class will focus on Affective Skills and 30% on Study Skills.

9. Resource Classes • These classes of 5-12 students are taught by highly qualified/best qualified special education teachers. The need for these courses is determined by the IEP committee. Classes are offered in all core academic classes, grades 9-12, and all course and county standards are followed.

10. Co-taught Classes • These regular education classes are taught by a regular education teacher and a special education teacher in the core academic classes for grades 9-12 • A student’s special ed. service hours may be counted in these classes depending upon the student’s disability and need for extra assistance. • The student’s need for these are determined by the IEP committee.
