International Dyslexia Assoc. • Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.
These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often UNEXPECTED in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.
Whatteachers can do to help your student • Allow opportunities for students to HEAR the text (audiobooks, read alouds, etc.) • Reading Pens (Training coming soon!) • Provide visual cues • Allow extra time for reading/processing information • Check for understanding
What can parents do at home? • Accept that dyslexia does not mean stupid. The student CAN learn! • Show support for your child. Make sure he/she knows that they are loved. • Provide a quiet place at home to study • Provide assistance with homework as you are able. Seek help from if you are not able to assist with homework. Establish a regular eat, sleep, study routine at home. • Read to your child and let your child see you reading. (audiobooks, text-to-speech feature on computer/ipad) • Give children responsibility at home. • Write notes, but do not criticize spelling errors in the child’s notes. • Don’t compare your child to other children. • Be careful not to put your child down. • Keep a good relationship with the school and stay in contact often.
