Lorax Ecosystem • Biotic Factors – truffula trees, Bar-ba-loots, Humming fish, Swommee swans….the Onceler and his clan, consumers? • The THNEED??? • Abiotic factors – water, air, sunlight • Interactions? Truffula Trees produce fruit for Bar-ba-loots, Humming fish and swans swim in the ponds, Onceler and consumers use truffula tufts, all breathe air

  3. Open or closed aspects of the system? • Open: Onceler and clan enter Thneeds leave, Bar-ba-loots leave, Swommee Swans leave • Closed : Smog stays in air , Gloop stays in ponds

  4. Feedback Flowchart • Positive or negative? Onceler sells Thneed Onceler motivated to BIGGER Onceler sells more Thneeds OncelerMORE motivated to keep BIGGERING More THNEEDS, which everyone needs!

  5. Sustainable Solutions? • Role of technology? • Privatization – private ownership limits the need to share, individuals control 100% of the resource • Regulation – limits use of the resource, enforced by punishment • Incentives – limits the use of the resource, encouraged by rewards

  6. Considerations for Sustainability • Three Pillars: • Environmental Conservation • Social Equity • Economic Demand

  7. Stop and discuss… • As a group: discuss the posted questions. We like lively, but polite, debates! • Individually: choose one of the questions and write a response on a piece of lined paper. Due at the end of class.

  8. Discussion Questions: • The growing human population is considered an environmental problem. Why? Do you agree with this view? • Is there a carrying capacity for humans on Earth? Will we ever reach this? Why? • Do you think a major resource we depend on will ever be completely depleted (gone)? Which one(s)? What would be the consequence? • How do you think technology could affect sustainability?
