The Parable of the Ten VirginsMatthew 25:1-13 • “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. • 2Five of them were foolish and five were wise. • 3The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. • 4The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.
5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. • 6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ • 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. • 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’
9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ • 10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ • 12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ • 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
Those Foolish Ones ! • “This is the class that in time of peril are found crying, Peace and safety. They lull their hearts into security, and dream not of danger. When startled from their lethargy, they discern their destitution, and entreat others to supply their lack;…. • But character is not transferrable. No man can believe for another. No man can receive the Spirit for another” (Christ Object Lessons 411.2). • “It is in crisis that character is revealed” (COL 412.1).
The Wise, Matthew 26:36-46 • 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” • 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. • 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” • 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
The Wise, Matthew 26:36-46 • 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. • 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” • 42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” • 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.
The Wise, Matthew 26:36-46 • 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. • 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. • 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
