An Introduction To: Orbital Head Technology
History of the Orbital Head • Texwrap started development of the servo driven orbital head in 1998. • By 2000 the design was perfected and fully tested. • The model “146” wrapper was the first wrapper to utilize the orbital head. • Texwrap received patent# 6,854,242 in February, 2005. • The first146 wrappers are still running today, with over 500,000,000 cycles logged.
What so different about the orbital head compared to other cross seal types? • Watch the orbital head in action • The sealing jaw is held in the vertical position • Observe the opening height of the jaws • Notice how smooth the motion is at high speeds.
The Orbital Seal Head is different from Box Motion Seal Heads because: • The Orbital Seal Head does not have to come to a complete stop when cycling. This drastically reduces stress on the components. • The Orbital Seal Head uses inertia to its advantage, it does not fight against it every cycle like a reciprocating Box Motion Seal Head. • The Orbital Seal Head will cycle at much higher rates! At 200 packages per minute the Orbital Seal Head is exposed to very minimal stresses. A Box Motion Seal Head running at this speed would fail in a very short time due to the repeated high stresses resulting from reciprocating motion. • The Texwrap Orbital Seal Head will run at these high rates for the life of the machine!
The Orbital Seal Head is different from Rotary Seal Head machines because: • The Orbital Seal Head knife and cushion maintain vertical orientation during the entire seal cycle. Vertical orientation allows for reduced cutoff lengths and increased film savings. • Shrink films prefer a vertical sealing motion rather than a sweep sealing motion like rotary seal heads. • The Orbital Seal Head geometry accepts a much taller package. • The Orbital Seal Head allows for complete control of film relaxation on the leading and trailing edge of the product. Film relaxation is critical for strong seals in shrink film. • The Orbital Seal Head knife and cushion are optimized for shrink films. Rotary seal head machines are designed for hard (polypropylene based) films.
Inside the gear head • Hardened gears for lifetime reliability. • High load needle style bearings. • Designed safety factor over 400% for all components.
What about the belts that drive the gear heads? • Each gear head belt is designed with a safety factor over 1,000%! • Belts are designed for infinite life! • There has never been a belt failure since the inception of this design.
