  2. What was the Harlem Renaissance? • A literary, artistic, cultural, intellectual movement that began in Harlem, New York after World War I. • It is also known as the New Negro Movement.

  3. Continued… • The movement raised significant issues affecting the lives of African Americans through literature, art, music, drama, painting, sculpture, movies, and protests.

  4. Still continued… • Although the center of the Harlem Renaissance began in Harlem, New York, its influence spread throughout the nation. • It ended in about 1935 during the Great Depression.

  5. Some Famous Contributors: • RidgelyTorrence (playwright) • Hubert Harrison (editor) • Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and Willie "The Lion" Smith (musicians) • Zora Neale Hurston (author) • Langston Hughes (poet)

Themes of the Harlem Renaissance: • The influence of the experience of slavery and emerging African-American folk traditions on black identity • The effects of institutional racism • The dilemmas inherent in performing and writing for elite white audiences • The question of how to convey the experience of modern black life in urban North.
