  4. Relative pronouns as Subject e.g. a) I thanked the woman. She helped me. • I thanked the woman whohelped me. b) The book is mine. It is on the table. • The book whichis on the table is mine. • The book is mine which is on the table. Notes: Relative pronouns closely follow the noun they modify.

  5. Relative pronouns as Object e.g. a) The man was Mr. Jones. I saw him. • The man who(m)I saw was Mr. Jones. b) The movie wasn’t very good. We saw it last night. • The movie whichwe saw last night wasn’t very good.

  6. Notes • THAT can be used instead of WHO/ WHICH in everyday speech. e.g. The man thatI saw was Mr. Jones. The book thatis on the table is mine.

  7. Notes • Relative pronouns can be omitted in object clauses. e.g. The man ØI saw was Mr. Jones. The movie Øwe saw last night wasn’t very good. That’s the car ØI used to own.

  8. Relative pronouns as possessive pronouns e.g. a) I know the man. His bicycle was stolen. • I know the man whose bicyclewas stolen. b) Mr. Catt has a painting. Its value is inestimable. • Mr. Catt has a painting whose valueis inestimable.

  9. Restrictive vs Non-restrictive Relative Clauses e.g. a) Look at the man. He is teaching in the classroom. • Look at the manwho is teaching in the classroom. b) Sue was extremely hungry. She decided to cook some spaghetti. • Sue,who was extremely hungry, decided to cook some spaghetti. Restrictive R-clause Non-restrictive R-clause
