Shelf Free/E-Books Group Update Nov 2013 Stephen Edwards E-Books Adviser Hampshire Library Service Co-Chair SCL E-Books Group/Shelf Free
E-books Group Action 2012-13 • E-Books community of practice group revived under wing of SCL Digital Group – action plan Nov 2011 • 3 national meetings held – last in October 2012 • SCL proposals developed http://www.goscl.com/scl-position-on-e-lending-in-libraries/ • Meetings with PA during 2011-12 without agreement • Meetings with Individual Publishers – summer/autumn 2012 • Good will toward libraries and willingness to agree an e-lending model • Submission to Sieghart E-Lending Review (in full on Knowledge Hub)+ attended Evidence Day. Positive outcome!
National E-Books Group to Shelf Free • Last Group meeting in Oct debated our future activity • Small independent action group started in Dec 2012 • Shelf Free blog set up in Feb 2013 • Since networking on and use of Knowledge Hub has not been great, we set up a new Jiscmail mailing list to exchange ideas/discuss problems • A position statement on e-lending problems to inform Elected Members and library customers issued: see http://shelffree.org.uk/ • No input requested from us re the design of post Sieghart tender fot authority pilots
Next Steps – Library E-Books Group • Knowledge Hub funding may be withdrawn? https://knowledgehub.local.gov.uk/group/ebooksservicedevelopmentforpubliclibraries • Shelf Free to take over from SCL E-Books Group? • How can we either as individuals or as local authority employees assert the positive role of libraries in e-lending? • NB Use of position statement and articulating the value and values of public library e-lending
Next Steps – Library E-Books Group • Learning swiftly lessons from e-lending pilots eg library sites e-book selling, legitimate sharing of management information with publishers, libraries as shop windows for publishing? IT/Platforms crucial! • Who else wants to put a constructive library point of view forward on Shelf Free blog? • Can we use/set up aggregator user groups to jointly drive progress? • Can we work together with tendering for services? • We want to use meetings like these to share expertise and experience – hence the afternoon informal workshops • We need to learn from US developments to push the UK market forward – new entrants next year?
Next Steps – Library E-Books Group Most Importantly: • What are your views on the future make up and operation of our public library e-books group? • Who would like to join and actively contribute to Shelf Free?
