Spatial Ontology Community of Practice Workshop November 12, 2009 • Maps and map visualization • Features and feature geometries • Geographic and spatial-temporal relationships
Special Thanks to Workshop Supporters MITRE OGC ONTOLOG The Morning Session will be recorded by ONTOLOG and available for viewing within a week
Spatial Ontology Community of Practice (SOCoP) • The Spatial Ontology Community of Practice was officially begun in October of 2006 to: • Foster collaboration among researchers, technologists & users of spatial knowledge representations and reasoning towards the development of spatial ontologies for use by all in the Semantic Web. • Support open collaboration and open standards for increased interoperability of spatial data across government • Synchronize across the entire spectrum of applicable geospatial standards (via W3C, ISO, OGC, etc.) and with Geospatial Profile of FEA and the Geospatial LOB
2nd Annual SOCoP Workshop Purpose: continue the discussion from last year’s workshop advancing understanding about state of research, implementation requirements, anticipated value and future role of spatial ontologies and semantic tools in the continued growth of the spatial data domain. Address the: Can a meaningful reference model be crafted to guide work to accelerate the pace of advancement for the development and use of geospatial ontologies and related semantics?
From 1st SOCoP Workshop • Key Areas of Focus • Meetings and Workshop • Monthly SOCoP Meetings • Workshops and Presentations • USGIF Tech Days • International Semantic Web Conference 2009 –Terra Cognita Workshop • 2nd SOCoP Workshop • Develop a Demo/Pilot, Identify Tools and Best Practices • Presented a Demo at USGIF Tech Days • Workshop today to continue to explore what may be done • Several SOCoP Members submitted a porposal for NSF INTEROP • Develop a Reference Model • Work has been started and is available at SOCoP wiki • Afternoon session will continue this topic • Membership • SOCoP is open to interested parties
