Survey says… • Most important in a major? • Job availability • Salary • Job Demand • Most appealing about a major? • Learning new things • Variety of career opportunities • Working with people 82% of Baylor students say job availability and the opportunity to learn new things are the most important factors when choosing a major.

Most important factor • Let’s look at the numbers…. • Undergrad business degrees hired at ConocoPhillips in 2010 • MIS: 13 full time, 17 intern • Accounting: 9 full time, 8 intern • Finance: 10 full time, 6 intern • HR: hire graduate school only • Marketing: 3 full time, 8 intern Job availability So…where are the jobs?! Employers need MIS majors.

  6. Common concerns • Self • Can I even do this? I’m not techy! • Society • Everybody is nerdy • Job • I don’t want to sit and program ALL DAY! But…MIS is scary!!

  7. “Can I even do this?” • Ask yourself these questions: • Am I organized? • Do I work hard? • Do I want many career opportunities? • Do I like learning new things? • Am I interested in technology? • Yes? You can succeed in MIS!

  8. “Everybody is nerdy” MIS teaches: Strategic thinking Technical understanding Excellent problem-solving skills Project management Team management Client management Basic business principles But do I have to program?

  9. Programming!!?? • Yes, you learn it • Basic building block skill • Remember “working with people”? • Curriculum • Basic business skills • Database “I don’t know how and don’t want to program.”
