    1. Weather Folklore -- Urban Advanced Science

    2. Weather Folklore Onion skins very thin; mild winter coming in Onion skins thick and tough winter will be cold and rough

    3. Facts of Onion Skin Attempts long range conditions Rely on selective memory Follow pattern of cool summer to warm winter

    4. Facts # 2 Thunder in the fall calls for snow Not very accurate as same with the national weather service If onions grow a thick layer of skin winter will be cold

    5. Pictures

    6. “If crows fly low, winds going to blow; If crows fly high, winds going to die.” By: Andrew Couch Per. 6

    7. Description of Folklore The folklore says that crows will fly low when there is going to be higher winds. If a crows fly high that would mean their wouldn’t be any wind.

    8. Scientific Basis Science shows that high air pressure makes the air more dense which would make less wind and generally make good weather. low air pressure usually is a sign for high winds and thunderstorms.

    9. Birds can “sense” air pressure Birds fly low searching for shelter when there’s a drop in air pressure. So that means crows would fly higher if there is good weather.

    11. What does this mean? Some older people claim that when they get aches, rain or a storm immediately follow. They have tried, but they cannot find any evidence that this is completely true

    12. They say that the cold conditions, rising humidity and gusty winds cause the joints to hurt. The membranes act like a barometer, in the way that they expand due to decreasing pressure.

    13. Other commonly used expressions "weather sensitive” “feeling under the weather” “my aches and pains speak of coming rains”

    14. “I know ladies by the score whose hair foretells the storm; Long before it begins to pour their curls take a drooping form” By: Sean Hilzendeger

    15. Folklore History This came from many women who complain of bad hair days. Ask a girl what's their worst enemy with bad hair days, they would say humidity. For curly haired people their curls get all frizzy For strait haired people their hair curls

    16. The Science Behind It When the air gets humid, human hair tends to grow (especially blond hair) When curly hair grows, the curls become straighter and droopy Humid air tends to tell a rain storm is coming

    17. Why does hair react to humidity? When you get out of a shower, you notice drying your hair is difficult. This is because your hair absorbs a lot of water, and expands This is why curly hair droops in humidity Straight hair frizzes because the hair is tighter, so it curls and frizzes.

    19. Rainbow in the east, sailors at peace. Rainbow in the west, sailors at distress.

    20. Most storm systems in the mid latitudes move in a west to east fashion.

    23. “Mackerel scales and mare’s tails, make lofty ships carry low sails” By: Pete Economos P.6

    24. In this folklore, mackerel scales and mare’s tails are describing the cloud types. The second half is talking about the ships on the water and how the weather will affect them.

    25. Yes, it was a very good indicator about the weather; that is, before we had all of our nice technology we have today to precisely predict and read weather patterns.

    31. Lightning never strikes in the same place.

    32. People think that the folklore, Lightning never strikes in the same place, means that no one will ever have the same bad thing happen to them twice.

    33. Lightning can strike though, in the same place twice. So the saying is ultimately untrue. Lightning has hit Cape Canaveral multiple times.

    34. The saying is misleading, but the meaning for the saying may be true. Lightning can easily hit the same spot twice, maybe in even ten minutes! But the meaning, the same exact bad thing can’t happen again is true.

    35. This saying has been shortened to “lightning never strikes twice,” because it has been said enough times that someone decided to shorten it.

    37. DESCRIPTION This was commonly used among people to plan their days activities. Red sky at night is good Red sky in the morning is bad. Based on dust particles in the air and the suns rays reflecting off of them.

    38. Red sky at night sailors delight means that there will be good weather ahead. People believe that because when the sky is red late it means that there is high pressure and little dust particles in the air. And high pressure and no dust are good indicators that there will be good weather on the way.

    39. Red sky in morning sailors warning means that there will be bad weather ahead. People believe that because when the sky is red early in the morning it means that there is high pressure and lots of dust particles in the air. And high pressure are good indicators that there is bad weather on the way

    40. SIMILAR SAYINGS In the bible Jesus said,” When in evening, ye say, it will be fair weather: For the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather today; for the sky is red and lowering.’’
