TsunamiReady • Key component of NTHMP tsunami mitigation efforts • Partnership of local NWS & Emergency Management • Establishes basic level of tsunami preparedness • Modeled after successful StormReady Program • Currently 101 TsunamiReady communities • Benefits: • Increases public awareness and understanding of tsunami threat • Improves community pre-planning • Improves preparedness for “all-hazards” • Encourages consistent approach • NOAA funding available to support TR efforts through NTHMP/ TsunamiReady grant program • Provides for recognition of communities
As of January, 2012, there were 101 TsunamiReady sites in 10 states and territories.

TsunamiReady Improvement Plan • Vision: Strengthened TR program – encourages resilience (rather than minimum state of readiness) • Comprehensive mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery guidelines • Drivers: • Indonesian tsunami (2004) • NOAA / NWS Service Assessments: • Jun 14, 2005 West Coast Tsunami Warning - 7.2 off the coast of Northern CA • Sep 29-30, 2009 South Pacific Basin Tsunami • GAO Reports (U.S. Tsunami Preparedness): 2006 and 2010 • NTHMP 5-Year Review (2007) • Recommendations from TR Stakeholder Meetings (2007-10) • NAS Study: Tsunami Warning and Preparedness (2010) • Tsunami Warning and Education Act (PL 109-424) (2006)
TsunamiReady Improvement Plan • Status: • New guidelines prepared (population-based) • New TsunamiReady website in development • However: Plans for workshops to support strengthened TsunamiReady program development now on-hold (due to budget cuts and future budget uncertainties) • Workshops were to have been conducted in 2011 (with NWS Regions, coastal WCMs, and Tsunami Warning Centers)
TsunamiReady Improvement Plan • Still to come (pending funding availability)… • Conduct external review of proposed TR guidelines • Present to NTHMP Coordinating Committee (for approval) • Conduct pilot testing in volunteer communities • National roll-out strategy (timeline, develop “tool kit”, press releases and other publicity) • Update NOAA / NWS policy (NWS directives) • Create & implement new performance measures
