  1. Establisment of County Talent Academy A case study of the National Youth Talent Academy NYTA

  2. INTRODUCTION • The National Youth Talent Academy (NYTA) is a programme that seeks to identify, nurture and develop talent among the youth of Kenya. It was jointly rolled out by the former Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MOYAS), Ministry of Education in partnership with UNICEF in March 2010.

VISION • To be the leading centre of excellence in Africa at identifying, nurturing, developing, promoting and celebrating young talent.MISSION • To maximize the full potential of young talented Kenyan youth and avail a conducive environment and opportunity to enable them to nurture and develop these talents for sustainable livelihoods.

  4. REGIONAL TALENT CENTRES • The NYTA also rolled out an in-school talent development component in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. The Regional Talent Centers that manage the in-school programme includes:- • 1. Upper Hill High School - Football and Basketball. • 2. Maseno School -Rugby and Basketball. • 3. Kakamega High School - Football and Rugby. • 4. Shimba Hills High School - Basketball and Netball. • 5. Matuu Memorial - Football and Handball. • 6. St. Agatha Mokwo - Athletics. • 7. Kerugoya Girls High School - Hockey. • 8. Cheptil High School - Volleyball. • 9. Isiolo High School - Football. • 10. DadaabHigh School - Volleyball. • 11. Garrisa High School - Volleyball and Football.

ACHIEVEMENTS/Key milestones • NYTA has proved Talent can lead to secure livelihoods with the following being achieved at the conclusion of the 2nd class:- • Over 5000 youth have benefitted from the programme • 100 Talent Academy students found full-time/part-time employment. • 20 Talent Academy students obtained full educational scholarships. • 42 Talent Academy students represented Kenyan International Teams. • The following teams have had multiple successes in national competitions; Boys Football (FC Talanta), Girls Football (Matuu FC)-won the Women National League 2012, Volleyball (NYTA Shimba Hills) which we will go into further details in the following slides.

Girls Football • Won the UNICEF National Women’s league 2012. • Seven Girls were included in the under 20 National Women Team that almost made it to the World Cup 2012. • Played several matches in the local tournaments with impressive wins. The Football team has travelled to several countries posting impressive results:- • Ghana – Liberty Professional Tournament • Rwanda – Won the Presidents Cup Tournament • Italy – 1st Runner up. • However, the most outstanding achievement has been the 17.8 million sponsorship deal from Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) towards the graduates of NYTA football boys team dubbed FC Talanta. • This sponsorship is running for three years.

Football BoysThe Football team has travelled to several countries posting impressive results:-Ghana – Liberty Professional Tournament Rwanda – Won the Presidents Cup TournamentItaly – 1st Runner up.However, the most outstanding achievement has been the 17.8 million sponsorship deal from Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) towards the graduates of NYTA football boys team dubbed FC Talanta.   8. Girls Volleyball • Placed 6th in the National KVF Women’s league. • Most of the players have been absorbed in the National teams. • Beach Volleyball( Senior Category Position 2 Junior Category Position 3)

Key Factors to Consider • Identify disciplines according to local talent • Infrastructure; sports grounds, halls/classes of training, (hire or permanent) • Identify and select on merit basis themost talented (if you get it wrong here, you will never have it right later) • Employ qualified instructors both from local and national • Relevant sports or performing arts equipment • Programme; time frame, curriculum and syllabus • Life skills education
