VISCOSITY Transport property defined as the retarding effect of slower layers of a fluid on an adjacent faster layer.
VISCOSITY • Viscosity is a transport property that is observed when there is a momentum or velocity gradient. • It is defined as the retarding effect of a slower layer of a fluid on an adjacent faster layer. • Flux = Jxα -dv/dx where the proportionality constant = η = viscosity coefficient or constant ( g/(cm-s)
Experiment 1. Measure viscosity by measuring time (t) it takes a fluid to fall between two marks of viscometer. ηρ = Bt where ρ = fluid density and B = viscometer constant. 2. Determine B using water 3. Determine η of BSA as a function of its concentration
Experiment (2) 4. Determine effective spherical radius of BSA protein. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for denatured BSA.
Two-Day Expt • Day 1: Native BSA: make stock solution and its dilutions; measure η = f(c). Denatured BSA: make stock solution • Day 2: d-BSA: make dilutions and measure η = f(c).
