I-WALK Partnership & Purpose Assist communities in the development,implementation, and evaluation of local Safe Routes to School programs
I-WALK Goal To develop a sustainable model for community coalitions to continuously update, implement, and evaluate the local Safe Routes to School (SRTS) plan.
I-WALK Components • Community coalition • Evaluation • Teacher Tally • Parent/Child Online Survey • GPS Walkability Assessment • Monthly reporting • GPS & Program Training, TA • Presentation of data results to community
1. Community Coalition • Local public health • School representatives: teachers, principals, parent, student • Citizens: grandparents, community organizations and clubs • Parks and recreation department • Public safety, school resource officer, law enforcement • City planners • DNR
2a. Evaluation: Teacher Tally • Determines how students get to and from school • Conducted Fall 2010 • Again in Spring 2011
2b. Evaluation: Parent & Student online Survey • Identifies current routes students take to/from school • Identifies barriers to walking or biking to school • Results back to coalitions
2c. Evaluation: GPS Walkability Assessment • Coalition and community members walk routes identified by the parent & student survey • GPS is used to collect data and sent back to ISU Extension for analysis
2d. Evaluation: Monthly Reports Provides IDPH with… • Project progress in each community • Input and guidance for program improvement
I-WALK 2010-2011 Schools & Enrollment, N=1924 Over 1900 students 2 communities in each of the 6 LPH Regions 12 schools
3. GPS & Program Training, TA • 1 Day training and mapping of routes • Overview of GPS use and data collection • Occur between April & May 2011 • Technical assistance provided by IDPH & ISUE
4. Presentation to community • Aug/Sept 2011 present data results and recommendations to community • Next steps to Safer Routes to School • Invite coalition members, community, and stakeholders
