Biography • Born September 16th, 1885 near Hamburg Germany • Parents were Clotilde (Sonnie) and Berndt Wackels Danielson • Went through depression from the age of 9 • 1904 Mother divorced her father • Married Oskar Horney in 1909 • 1911 she gave birth to Brigette • 1911 Karens mother Sonni died • She gave birth to her second child in 1913 and her third in 1915 • 1932 moved to Chicago • 1934 moved to New York • Karen divorced Oskar in 1937 • Died On December 4th, 1952 at the age of 67
Neorosis • Various mental or emotional disorders with symptoms such as insecurity, anxiety, depression , and irrational fears • She believed neorosis was more continuous in a normal life then other theorists • She came up with ten neurotic needs that led a person into emotional disorders • The 10 needs were put in 3 different coping strategies • Compliance – needs one, two, and three • Aggression – needs four to eight • Withdrawal – needs nine, ten, and three
Feminine Psychology • First person to present a paper on female psycology at an international meeting • Wrote 14 articles on feminine psycology from 1922 to 1937 • Believed that women were to dependent on men for everything • Believed society told women that they could only be pretty and rasie children • She taught women were capable of doing same things as men • May 6th, 1955 Karen Horney Clinic was opened in honor of woman’s important achievements
Self Theory • She had another way of looking at neurosis in terms of self images • Neurotics self is “split” into a despised self and an ideal self • Compliant person believes “I should be sweet, self-sacrificing, saintly” • Aggressive person says “I should be powerful, recognized, a winner” • Withdrawing person believed “I should be independent, aloof, perfect” • The neurotic moves back and forth between hating themselves and pretending to be perfect
