Are young adolescents’ health problems enhancing alcohol and drug use in late adolescence? Arve Strandheim, NTNU The Young-HUNT study
Are young adolescents’ health problems enhancing alcohol and drug use in late adolescence? • Aims: To explore the influence of early behavioural and health problems on later alcohol and drug use in adolescence. • Method: Prospective, total population cohort study, Nord-Trøndelag County, Norway. (Young-HUNT) • 2 399 adolescents aged 13-15 at baseline, followed to age17-19 at follow-up (4 years). • Analyzed by logistic regression models
Are young adolescents’ health problems enhancing alcohol and drug use in late adolescence? • Outcome variables: (follow up) • Frequent alcohol use, • initiation of drug use. • Exposure variables: (baseline) • conduct problems, • attention problems, • anxiety and depressive symptoms, • muscular pain, • Early alcohol-intoxication.
FINDINGS AT FOLLOW UP • 19% reported frequent alcohol use • 14% had tried cannabis or other drugs • Increased risk for frequent alcohol use if baseline: • Conduct problems OR 2.2 (1.7-3.0) • Attention problems OR 1.5 (1.2-2.0) • Increased risk for drug use if baseline • Conduct problems OR 2.6 (1.9-3.6)
BOYS had increased risk for drug use at follow up if there were baseline; Symptoms of anxiety or depression OR 2.2 (1.4-2.5) Muscular pain and tension OR 1.9 (1.2-2.3)
GIRLS with baseline alcohol-intoxication had increased risk for frequentalcohol use if they had baseline: Anxiety/depressive symptoms OR 1.9 (CI 1.1-3.1) Muscular pain/tension OR 1.7 ( CI1.1 -2.9)
Are young adolescents’ health problems enhancing alcohol and drug use in late adolescence? • CONCLUSIONS: • Yes, early adolescence conduct problems doubles risk both for frequent alcohol use, and initiation of drug use • Boys with anxiety/depressive symptoms or muscular pain/tension have increased risk for drug use • If girls with anxiety/depressive symptoms or muscular pain/tension get alcohol-intoxicated early, their risk for regular alcohol use increase
Are young adolescents’ health problems enhancing alcohol and drug use in late adolescence? • YES, BUT: • Any alcohol intoxication before the age of 16 strongly increase risk for later frequent alcohol use; • Boys; OR 3.6 (2.4-5.2) • Girls; OR 2.8 (1.9-4.1) • Any alcohol intoxication before the age of 16 strongly increase risk for later drug use: • Boys; OR 4.7 (3.2-7.0) • Girls; OR 7.7 (5.2-11.5)
