Bio-Diesel Project By: Chris Hempsall 12/06/2010 1st hr. Picture of a gas station that is just selling Bio-Diesel fuel.
Environmental Effects • Short term- bio-diesel could do one of the following: • Without subsidy, the industry would need a market at above $4 a gallon. Federal subsidy knocks the cost to just above $3. That's low enough for a boutique industry only. • It could reduce fossil fuels. • Long term-bio-diesel could do one of the following: • It actually tends to "clean out" built-up crud in the fuel system. • It could cause a rush or a dislodged plague to clog a fuel filter. • It has been also known to cause problems with already deteriorated rubber hoses, where the "plaque" is the only thing stopping the leaks. • It is lets out less pollution into the air than Petroleum did. Picture of a factory getting ready to get making some fuel.
Environmental effects • Bio-Diesel could reduce greenhouse gases from transport sector. • In 2004 there were 200 buses switched from Petroleum to bio-diesel and the bus exhaust particulate emissions jumped a factor of 1.8 but the Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions were high to. • But also they measured both gas and particulate matter • emissions close to where the school bus depot was located. During the first phase of the experiment conducted in January, the buses ran on petroleum diesel. The emissions were measured again in March when the vehicles switched to a 20 per cent biodiesel blend. Picture of the old oil goes through to turn into the fuel or Bio-Diesel fuel.
Accessibility • There is really no amount of Bio-Diesel there is in the world because they said that it can be made out of animal fats and Vegetable oil and corn. • Yes it is easy to get bio-diesel because not a lot of people use it and people could make it at home or some of the fuel plants make it out of corn or vegetable oil. • Yes it is renewable resource because It can be used in some of the existing engines or fuel injections and it also reduces the following greenhouse gases: carbon monoxide • ozone-forming-hydrocarbons • hazardous diesel particulate • acid rain-causing sulfur dioxide • lifecycle carbon dioxide Bio-Diesel process
Timeline for starting production. • Yes Bio-Diesel is available. • It has been available sense 2004 and is being made every day for the cars in the United States of America but some of the gas stations might not be selling it yet because some of them might not have enough tanks and might not want but maybe in the year or two the rest of the gas stations might be switching to bio-diesel. Picture of a factory view from the outside were the tanks are and the building were the oil gets turned gas.
Making the Bio-diesel fuel • When making biodiesel, producers are dealing with toxic chemicals. The components are caustic chemicals, an alcohol called methanol, a heat source, and the transferring of flammable fluids from one container to another. On-site industrially certified fire extinguishing equipment must be capable of putting out an oil-based fire. Industrial ventilation and controls are required as well. Glycerol (used in pharma-ceuticals and cosmetics) is produced as a co-product. • Yes it does take some time to make the fuels because like for instance some butters need to be solid so they don’t melt when getting to the factory. Picture of the trucks that carry the fuel from the factory were they get it at then take it to the factory instead of the big ones and the ones were they hall different fuels every time.
Videos and facts • Spike.com • Science.dicovery.com • Most of the bio-diesel made in the U.S.A. is made from on of the following: either soybeans or the yellow grease mainly reduced from the restaurant's.
Cars that take the bio-diesel and the cost of it • Some of the cars can take the fuel: • Most of the cars that have a diesel engine can take the bio-diesel fuel but most light weight cars cannot take the fuel because they don’t have a diesel engine in them. • The cost for bio-diesel is from the least price of $2.97 and the most is $3.35 for bio-diesel.
