Critical Care Unit May 2012 Diagnostic blood loss These losses contribute to anaemia in our patients We’ve just measured how much blood we take from our patients each day for blood tests On average it was 65 mls That’s about 450 mls per week (A unit of blood is 280 mls) In one case more than 150 mls was taken in one day Many blood tests help us look after the patient, but some are not essential The biggest room for improvement is in Arterial Blood Gases 1. The average, stable patient shouldn’t need more than two ABGs per day 2. If in doubt, check it is really required 3. 2-3mls of dead-space is usually enough to avoid sampling error 4. Maybe we should re-inject the dead space blood? We want to know your view about returning dead-space blood Talk to Emma Battle or Dan Nethercott
