  5. The War on Terror How it started

  6. 9/11 • Four planes hijacked • Two of the Four crash into the United States tallest buildings • One crashes into the Pentagon • Another crashes in a rural field in Pennsylvania.

  7. Retaliation • George W. Bush has public address and states their will be justice served for this horrible crime • October 7, 2001 was the first official day starting the longest lasting war in US history.

  8. Starting Date? • Dessert Storm • Multiple threats and attacks from rebel groups • But none of these attacks were as deadly as 9/11 & that’s why people call that day the true start of the “War on Terror”

  9. Osama Bin Laden • FBI most wanted person for more than 5 years. • The most sought after man of the 21st Century. • Blamed for the 9/11 attacks. • Killed by Navy SEAL team 6 on May 2, 2011

  10. Justified Going to War? • Bush believed Saddam Hussein had WMD, And were capable of attacking any part of the world. • And congress believed this was more than enough reason to invade Iraq.

  11. Natural Disasters • Southeast Asian Tsunami (2004) • 200,000 people in 12 countries killed • Hurricane Katrina (2005) • 1500 dead and $100 billion in damages • Haitian earthquake (2010) • 300,000 killed and a million homeless

  12. Obama • Obama received the most popular vote in US history. • Was first African American President but also the first to even receive the nomination of one of the major political parties.

Obama • An African American historian at Brown University says, “This moment ranks with the Emancipation Proclamation, The ratification of the 13th Amendment, (which ended slavery) and the Brown vs. the Board of Education as one of the most significant events in the history of the United States” • An event as significant as this happens once in a lifetime.

  14. BP oil spill • 82,000 birds, about 6,000 sea turtles and nearly 26,000 marine mammals were harmed in the oil spill.

  15. H1N1 • Flew virus that came back into the world around 2004-2005. • Killed more than 17,000 people world wide.

  16. Katrina • Category 5 storm, winds over 175 m/ph • More than 60 billion dollars spent in repairs.

  17. US Patriot Act • Strengthen US measures to prevent, detect and prosecute international money and financing Terrorism. • The purpose of the act is to detect and punish Terrorist acts in the US and around the Globe.
