Cold War & Tension with Soviet Union • Détente – policy that called for the ease of Cold War tensions • SALT I- Strategic Arms Limitation Talks- to discuss a slowdown in the creation and collection of weapons • China • Surprised Americans by trying to create a friendly relationship with China (new Communist nation; but an enemy of the Soviet Union) • Middle East • Nations in Middle East (all members of OPEC- Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) imposed an oil embargo and refused to sell oil to U.S. after we supported war with Israel • Caused an energy crisis in 1973 – we had been importing 1/3 of oil • Gas was a scare commodity, prices soared Foreign Relations
