  10. WARM is dedicated to improving the supply of physicians in rural Wisconsin and the health of rural Wisconsin communities; the size of each medical school class will increase by 25 students. Students will participate in an educational curriculum designed to prepare them for rural practice by providing extensive clinical training in rural Wisconsin during years three and four. Students will learn to address medical issues that are unique to rural areas, and give the students the opportunity to appreciate a rural lifestyle. WARM has the unique distinction of being the only rural focused program in the nation that supports a student’s pursuit of any specialty. A Rural Medical School Within a Medical School

  11. RWHC Roundtables • RWHC facilitates retention by directly addressing the isolation typically associated with rural health with over three dozen professional roundtables, representing a wide range of clinical and non-clinical disciplines. • Most of the about 40 roundtables meet 4-6 times per year, typically for 2-4 hours per meeting. Participants discuss topical issues, exchange ideas and implement special projects. • Several of the professional roundtables also devote meeting time to the development and review of competencies for their positions, which serves both a functional purpose for their respective facilities and satisfies JCAHO requirements. • Many RWHC products and services get their start via roundtables.

  12. RWHC Hospital to Hospital Program (H2H) • Futurist Leland Keyser suggested CEOs should visit other hospitals to gain insights to enhance their organization’s performance. • CEOs nominate own hospital or another. • Selected hospitals plan a four hour program. • CEOs continuously learn from each other through a process of structured site visits.

  13. RWHC Workforce Development Coordinator Responsible for disseminating info about positions via: • listings on Rural Health Careers in Wisconsin & other websites • contacting career associations • direct mailings • networking with technical college and university programs, program directors and career services • displays at career fairs/professional meetings • presentations at state and national conferences Available to provide supplemental assistance for facilities in need of temporary or internal recruitment assistance.

  14. Wisconsin Nurse Residency Program (ROI 350%) • An innovative, structured learning experience for new registered nurses designed to promote effective transition into professional practice. • Professional Development Plan—In order to address the unique needs of new practitioners, WNRP helps the new nurse create an individualized plan to build skills and develop competency. • Facilitated Learning Sessions—Every month, a six-hour learning session is provided that engages participants in an enriching learning process to encourage critical reflection on nursing practice. • Clinical Coaches—When nurses enter the program, they are partnered with an experienced nurse designated as a clinical coach. • E-Learning and Discussion—Curriculum and suplementary materials for themonthly face to face sessions are provided on compact disks and ongoing discussion is available via a “listserve.” Begun with a federally funded statewide collaboration between Marquette University and rural and urban acute care health care partners in Wisconsin; continuing as shared service at RWHC.

  15. Wisconsin Nurse Preceptor Training Opportunities Assist nurses to develop the knowledge and skills needed to be effective practice-based preceptors for undergraduate student nurses. • Marquette University has received a second HRSA “Nurse Education Practice & Retention” grant to further their Nurse Residency Program and to enhance and expand educational support for experienced nurses to function as preceptors and clinical coaches. • The La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium is extending a “nurse preceptor training” opportunity to all hospitals in western Wisconsin. A HRSA tele-health grant will allow for 60 RN’s to receive online preceptor training through either UW-Madison or Winona State University.

  16. Wisconsin Pharmacy Forum • Collaboration between UW School Pharmacy, Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin & the State of Wisconsin’s Pharmacy Examining Board, RWHC & WHA. • Academic Goal: Will develop student-related goals and strategies to better train and recruit pharmacists for and to rural settings. • Research Goal: Formulate a research proposal to fill in missing data in current research about the current and growing shortage. • Practice Model Goal: We will look at best practices to support the most effective use of pharmacists and their retention.
