HinaMatsuri • Girls Day is a day to thank and pray for the happiness and health of the girls of Japan. Most homes with girls display dolls for this Doll's Festival and dedicate to them peach blossoms. Hinamatsuri is also called Momo no Sekku meaning festival of peach. The main dolls used in the displays are "Odairi-sama," a prince and "Ohina-sama," a princess.
About The festival, on the 3rd day of the 3rd month, is held in early spring. They display many dolls to celebrate girls and young woman as well as peaches as this is the time that peaches are in blossom. Dolls are new and old passed down through generations of woman to use every year on this special day.
How it’s Celebrated! • On this day families decorate their home and dolls to ensure their daughters happiness for the future. The dolls are displayed always in the best rooms of the house and a set of dolls usually contain about 15 each. This festival began over a 1000 years ago!
History • Hinamatsuri has a long history. The tradition started in the peace period "Heianjidai". It was a period in Japanese history from 794 to 1185.
