Objectives of the course • Understanding of the structures and principles of international and european economic law • Knowledge of the basic provisions and treaties • Focus on the legal and institutional issues of the EU and the WTO, especially on the interfaces between these organisations • Methodology for solving legal cases with an international/supranational background

  4. 2.1. Structures and principles • Structures: Organisations, Institutions and decision-making-processes • Principles: Legal principles of international and regional organisations

  5. 2.2. Basic provisions and treaties • Based on the structures and principles • International and regional (supranational) provisions and treaties (EC-treaty, WTO-treaty including GATT, GATS, TRIPS and plurilateral agreements) • Especially: International and regional economic constitution (partly principles, partly directly derived from principles) • Special regulations concerning fields of interest (e.g. competition regulations)

  6. 2.3. Focus esp on vertical interfaces WTO (international integration) Common trade policy of the EU Global rules of the WTO EU (regional integration)

  7. 2.4. Methodology for solving cases • Complex Cases with international/supranational background • e.g. Banana-Case: WTO-law (e.g. most favored nation principle) EC-law (treaties of Lomé, internal market) National law (application of EC-law, private enforcement of WTO-law)
