Exposure & Effects Pilot Study (EEPS) • RMP Objective #4 • Measure pollution exposure and effects on selected parts of the Estuary ecosystem (including humans) • EEPS Goals: • Develop a suite of indicators for S&T • Conduct short-term studies to assess SF Bay E&E
10-Year Program Review Recommendations for EEPS (2003) • Great chemical characterization of the Bay but what does it mean? • Need to understand biological impacts of chemicals detected • In response, TRC/SC allocated • $200K/yr for EEPS through 2008
Selection of Indicators • Rationale presented in Conceptual Framework (2004) - ranked • Terns • Cormorants • Benthos/sediment • Diving ducks • Fish • Clapper rails • Seals
2008: Criteria for Inclusioninto Status & Trends • Relevance to Management Questions/Decisions • Example: protection of endangered species, evaluation of TMDLs, etc. • Scientifically achievable • Example: Likelihood of finding significant effects or documented effects in literature • Ability to represent overall health of Estuary • Mix of indicators
Proposed Research • Based on criteria, Four-year Plan proposes continued research on: • Terns • Cormorants • Clapper rails • Diving ducks -anecdotal evidence suggests not a policy concern? • Fish • Benthos/sediment • Seals - uncertainties regarding monitoring/hard to establish E&E
Funded 2005 • Fish Effects Study -AMS/UCD -- 2 yrs, $50K per yr – high priority • Evaluation effects of contamination on shiner surfperch (field and lab study) • Diving Ducks - $20K • Sediment Assessment - $15K • SFEI Labor - $25K • Peer Review - $5K • Total ~ $120K, remaining $80K
Proposed 2005 • Terns - Hg analyses in Caspian, team w/USFWS $3K • Benthos/Sediment Indicators - evaluation of archive and scoping for 2006-2008 - $10K • Fish Effects - Add-on. Develop laboratory culture - $20K • Clapper Rails - $5K scoping for exposure or pathway study • Small Fish - $40K –PS -indicator of local contamination and prey species (food web)
Proposed 2006 and beyond • Tern - Egg injection study (PBDEs/Contaminant mixtures) • Benthos/Sediment Indicators – assess sed. toxicity/benthic impairment, validation of SQO work • Fish Effects - Continuation of 2005 work • Small Fish • Clapper Rail Effects • Cormorants Eggs - moving to S&T?
