1. Flexibility • Flexibility is a fundamental skill to possess in the workforce as it demonstrates the ability to adapt to various situations.
Situation • During my time as a volunteer at Toronto Fashion Week, I was assigned to the “fashion environment” section. My role involved catering to guestsand ensuring their needs were met and making sure the area was clean and orderly. However, due to a shortage in volunteers other areas of the event required immediate attention.
Action • Due to a shortage in volunteers, I was required to help out in other areas of Toronto Fashion Week. I assisted the runway areas and arranged seating and placed gift bags on the seats specified by the Runway Room Coordinator. I also worked at BMO registration and dealt with high priority clients and guests. At registration I was also in charge of communicating with customers and providing them with important information regarding fashion week. I also assisted with various sponsorship booths including Air France and worked the Air France photo booth, along with handing out complimentary macaroons and sparkling apple cider. Previously I had never worked in the fashion industry and this proves I can easily adapt to any situation.
Result • As a result of my volunteer experience at Toronto Fashion Week, each section was able to run smoothly and effectively. The main objective of the event was to promote Canadian fashion and propel Canadian designers to the forefront of the global fashion arena. Through my assistance, each section was able to run successfully and the overall goals and objectives were fulfilled. Overall, guests, sponsors and media were satisfied and their needs were catered too. Furthermore, Canadian designers were able to successfully put their latest designs on display in riveting and beautiful shows.
2. Planning • Planning is an important skill as it demonstrates the necessary research done to make informed decisions and plan for various events
Situation • When I interned at PR company, MCPR Group I was involved in the planning process for the Toronto Crime Stoppers Ball. The Toronto Crime Stoppers Ball is the company’s biggest event as it includes approximately 500 guests including special guests such as the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and Police Chief Bill Blair. The planning begins months prior and planning is a fundamental part as it encompasses a variety of different actions and ultimately leads to the success or failure of the event.
Action • During the planning process, I was in charge of organizing the guest database , updating website content, contacting possible donors and sponsors. I had never worked with such an elaborate data base before, and it really showed me the importance of planning and contacting clients and guests. It also helped me develop my computer skills, as I was not familiar with Excel before.
Result • Having the opportunity to help plan such an elaborate event demonstrated how important the planning process is, and how extensive it can be. At my time at MCPR I gained a wealth of knowledge in regards to planning, and it is a necessary skill in the working industry. Through my planning skills, I helped organize the Toronto Crime Stoppers Ball and ensured that the event was ultimately a success.
3. Leadership Skills • Leadership skills demonstrate the ability to take control and be in charge in various situations.
Situation • In my undergrad, at the the University of Toronto I was a member of the sorority Pi Beta Phi. During my time at Pi Phi, I was the Chair of the Leadership and Nominating Committee. LNC’s main purpose was to elect the upcoming executive council, and ensure that the executive council was keeping up to chapter standards. Elections were every November so I had to ensure every chapter member was aware of these upcoming elections and they also had the necessary forms to apply for the position
Action • As LNC Chair, I lead workshops for understanding the importance of being involved within the chapter, along with giving presentations for each position. I had a council of 2-3 women and during election time we would meet a few days a week to discuss the applications and ultimately decide the slate. I would be in contact with our Alumnae Advisory Council as they oversaw events within the chapter. Our judgments had to be unbiased and we were picked to be on the council because we were thought to be well respected within the chapter. It was important because I had never led a committee of women before, and it was up to me to delegate tasks and have the final say for the executive council. I was in charge of the election process, and it was a great leadership experience.
Result • It was an important role as it taught me leadership skills in my ability to oversee a group of women, and it helped me understand the importance of the decision making process as it required due diligence and extreme care as our decision would ultimately affect the future of the chapter.
