Social Realism in Film Social Realism as a genre is dominant in film production in Britain. Social Realism films are fairly representative of real life. Stories, characters and settings are based loosely on an everyday character from the generation. A typical social realism film will feature characters from a working class background who through social or racial injustice or economic hardship have difficulty surviving the daily grind. Conventions of Social Realism are evident in films such as Trainspotting directed by Danny Boyle, This is England directed by Shane Meadows and Billy Elliot directed by Stephen Daldry
British New Wave Films 1950s British New Wave films finally gave the working-class a voice and celebrated their common identity. Previously the lower classes had been depicted on film as comic characters or as a nondescript and ancillary group. Now their daily lives were considered relevant enough to be the very premise of a story and they were portrayed as individuals with personalities, opinions and emotions. The nature of these films, which concerned the everyday events of ordinary people, earned them the tag of kitchen sink dramas. www.moviemail-online.co.uk
