  3. Lecture at Stanley Medical College Stanley Medical College (SMC) was formally established on July 2, 1938. The College is associated with the well known Government Stanley Hospital which has 1280 beds for in-patient treatment. The hospital has an out-patient attendance of around 5000 patients per day. The three well known departments of the Stanley Medical Hospitals are Surgical Gastroenterology, Urology and the Institute of Hand Rehabilitation and Plastic Surgery. The Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and the Department of Plastic Surgery (IRRH & DPS) is one of the best centres in Southeast Asia. People met: • Prof. Dr. S. Lecture at Stanley Medical College Lecture topic – “Update on Stroke: Who Should Get an Intervention?” • Attended by approximately 50-60 post graduate students, Resident Doctors and hospital staff. This was followed by Q&A session. Discussion points: • Welcome by the Head of Department (HOD) and Dean. Dean spoke about STEMI project in Cardiology and continuing engagement with ACP. Students go for 3 months ‘Observership’ during their 4.5 years study so they are ready to practice as soon as they graduate. ACP could help with the ‘Observership’ – identify hospitals, mentors etc. • Dr.Geethalakshmi wants to be engaged with ACP. Dr Mir invited her to become a Fellow of ACP and to send her CV. • HOD spoke of possible tie-ups. Appreciative of lecture. • Dr Mir highlighted benefits of ACP Membership. Encouraged students and residents to become members as college is IMED approved and therefore student membership is free. • ACP to revert with an Institutional rate for subscription to Annalsof Medicine and MKSAP.

Lecture at Madras Medical Mission The Madras Medical Mission(MMM) is an International Health Care Provider and a 256 bed Quaternary care centre of excellence providing healthcare services in the areas of Adult/Paediatric Cardiac care, Reproductive Medicine, Liver & Digestive diseases, Kidney and Multi-Organ transplantation. The hospital has an MOU with the Cleveland Clinic and the European Stent for Life. Holds joint conferences and workshops with Cleveland Clinic. People met: • Dr.Mullasari Ajit S. - Director Cardiology Lecture Topic: “Acute Coronary Syndrome: Who Should Get An Intervention?” Attended by 15 resident doctors and cardiologists

  7. Lecture at Madras Medical Mission Discussion Points: • Dr.Mullasari Ajit S. - Director Cardiology to be included in the Steering Committee. Has many publications to his credit. • Open to workshops and conferences • Lot of patients come from overseas for treatment. At least 2 patients from South Africa daily. Therefore need to have quality health care.

  9. Lecture at Govt. Kilpauk Medical College Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) is one of the premier government medical instituitions in India. Founded in 1960, the college has been instrumental in producing many world renowned doctors. There are 2 busy hospitals affiliated with the KMC - Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and Government Royapettah Hospital. People met: • Dr. R. NarayanaBabu - Deputy Superintendent • Dr.Balan • Prof. Dr.Usha Lakshmi, Professor of Medicine (faculty) Lecture Topic: “Update in Congestive Heart Failure” Attended by 50 post graduate students, Residents and physicians.

Kilpauk Medical College Discussion points: • Dr Mir welcomed by Dr NarayanaBabu and Head of Cardiology • International brochures and flyers distributed to students. • Keen on student membership and a possible tie up where they could exchange best practices etc. College is IMED approved and therefore student membership is free. • Welcomed such lectures by experts. • Dr Mir asked Prof. Dr.Usha Lakshmi, Professor of Medicine (faculty) to send her CV for consideration of Fellowship • Dr Mir highlighted benefits of ACP Membership. Encouraged students and residents to become members. • Institutional rate for subscription to Annalsof Medicine and MKSAP to be sent.

Lecture at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC & RI), now named Sri Ramachandra University (SRU), is a deemed university. SRU consists of eight constituent colleges with over 45 departments offering about 92 courses in health care and medical studies and research with more than 3500 students. In 1997, SRU entered into a relationship with Partners Harvard Medical International to pursue curriculum reform, faculty development, and improvements in health care quality and patient safety in the school's affiliated medical centre. One of the results of this collaboration was the achievement of accreditation by Joint Commission International in 2009, the first teaching hospital in India to obtain such accreditation from JCI. The university has been accredited by NAAC with A Grade with a GCPA of 3.52 on a 4-point scale, the highest to be awarded to a private medical university in India.

Members’ Dinner at the Westin, Velachery Chennai Discussion points • Members welcomed the opportunity to interact with a member of the Board of Regents • Suggested that ACP in India target post graduate students like is done in the USA. Have Post graduate updates specialty-wise. • Suggested that for national conference have 'updates' across sub specialties, academics and research. Invite Abstracts/Posters. • Procedures need to be taught. Non-invasive Content knowledge minimal. ACP could help fill this gap. • ACP can help with ‘Observership’. Since ACP can sponsor only 3 persons it was suggested that ACP can help identify hospitals and mentors if medical student/Resident can pay for own fare. • More visibility. Reach out to post graduate students. Post graduate updates specialty-wise. • Dr Shirazi and Dr.Sengottuvelu work closely with the Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University that has 30 medical colleges in Tamilnadu affiliated to it. Will help ACP connect with them. • Dr Ravichandran holds his own conference in India and would like Dr Mir to suggest a senior Nephrologist as speaker for the conference • All keen to help with and support the forthcoming conference and the India Chapter. Dr ND Ramanujam keen to be a speaker at the conference.

Lecture at Asian Heart Institute Asian Heart Institute (AHI) is a world-class 250 bed Indiancardiac care hospital, established in 2002 with ALL the medical and patient facilities you would expect in a world-grade cardiac hospital. As of July 2012, it was one of the two private hospitals in India to participate in a government insurance scheme to provide coverage for the poor. AHI has been built, and functions to, the guidelines of the Cleveland Clinic in USA. Discussion points: • The Director – Dr.Ramakant Panda was unavailable due to a medical emergency, however, the lecture series was well attended by the physicians, internists, nursing and faculty • Dr.Susheel Kumar Bindroo was vocal about methodologies used in India and the way medical care is provided in India. Diabetologists, Dr. Suresh Mehtalia and Dr. Manoj Chawla too expressed concerns about addressing specific medical interventions in India. • Showed interest in Gerontology. Much to be done in the area of Geriatrics. • Institutional rate for subscription to Annals of Medicine and MKSAP to be sent.

  24. Lecture at K.J. Somaiya Medical College Hospital & Research Centre The K. J. Somaiya Medical College is a private Medical College owned and managed by the Somaiya Medical Trust. The College has around 145 qualified experienced teaching faculty and 104 Resident Doctors working in 21 well equipped departments. The College runs Undergraduate course of MBBS and Postgraduate Courses in Pediatrics(M.D.) and Obstetrics and Gynaecology (M.S.).   27. Lecture at Saifee Hospital The Saifee Hospital has 33 specialised departments, more than 400 doctors and 236 beds. Today, the hospital is one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the entire country. Saifee Hospital is recognised by Diplomate of National Board –New Delhi for Post Graduate Programs in Medicine, General Surgery and Imaging. College of Physicians and Surgeons for Diploma Programs in Ophthalmology, Diabetes, Orthopedicsand Imaging. The Hospital is also recognised by The Maharashtra Medical Council as an Accredited Medical Teaching Institute for conducting CME's, Seminars, Workshops and Conferences. Discussion points: • Subscribe to the Indian Journal of Critical Medicine - journal of the Indian Society of Critical Care. • Dr. Mir fielded questions about management of Sepsis in India and comparisons with US. • Dr. Sachin Jain, HOD of Microbiology at the hospital was enthusiastic about participating in the 2014 conference to be held in Delhi • Institutional/corporate membership to be considered • Interest shown by some attending Residents to become ACP member

  31. Lecture at Seven Hills Hospital Seven Hills Hospital is built on a sprawling area of 17 acres with up to 2 million sq. ft. of built up area. Design complaint with international accredited hospital architectural norms. One of the very few hospitals in the world having an inpatient bed capacity of 1500, 24 Dialysis units, 36 Operation Theatres & 4 Cath Labs. Presentations were made by their own doctors and a panel discussion took place after Dr. Mir’s lectures. This was followed by Q&A session. Discussion points: • Seven Hills Hospital is keen to collaborate for such future lecture series • Would like to consider special conferences/workshops specially in the area of Hospital Management • Dr Asthana wants ACP to consider a certification program that will assure competency levels and fill gap that exists in skill sets of students coming from medical colleges of mixed repute

Willing to share benefits of ACP Membership with colleagues. ACP Flyers and International Brochure to be sent when required. Dr NiranjanRathod has promised to get 10 new members for ACP. • Suggested that for national conference have 'updates' across sub specialties, like done at the Annual Conference in the USA. Thought it was a great idea to Invite Abstracts/Posters at the Indian Conference and get them published thereby earning CME credits. • Dr.Chabbria who has been a member of ACP for the last 11 years is a great ambassador for ACP. • Hinduja Hospital had expressed interest during Dr Mir’s visit in September 2012 in sponsoring candidates for fellowships (for upto 10 candidates). They were working with Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (APIO) but it did not materialise. They were open to Fellowships/Mentorships. Dr Chhabria to take this up again with the hospital. • Interest shown in Gerontology/Geriatrics. Dr Mir to help. • All keen to help with and support the forthcoming conference and the India Chapter. • Suggested that ACP work closely with API. Dr SB Gupta, Dean ICP to discuss ACP Booth and speaking opportunity for ACP at the APICON 2014 at the Governing Body Meeting to be held on 7th & 8th September.

Agarwal, Professor of Excellence (ENT), Ex Dean Maulana Azad Medical College, Additional Director General of Health Services, President Delhi Medical Council • Dr.Suneela Garg, MD; Director Professor, Maulana Azad Medical College, Ex Head, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Delhi University • Dr. Girish Tyagi, Registrar cum Secretary, Delhi Medical Council Discussion points: • Dr Agarwal offered to fully support the ACP Conference to be held in New Delhi in Sept. 2014. Welcomed offer to be on the Steering Committee. Gave consent for Dr Suneela Garg to be on the Scientific Committee of the conference. • To help with getting key people from the Ministry of Health, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – the Director General, Dr.Katoch who is a Microbiologist to be involved in some way with the conference thereby raising the stature of the same. • Dr Agarwal said he could try get Ex President of India, Dr Abdul Kalam as Chief Guest. This will help get publicity for the conference as also attract participation and attendance.

  41. Meeting at Delhi Medical Council Discussion pointscontd.: • Suggested that topics of the Conference should be in line with areas of focus of the Indian Government. This will generate interest of the medical fraternity in India as also grab the attention of the policy makers. • Suggested tracks on ‘Communicable Diseases; Non-Communicable Diseases; Chronic Respiratory Diseases; Mental Health; Health Administration & Leadership; Geriatrics; Womens’ Health. • Will help with potential pharma participation as also will suggest and try and get key physicians as speakers/panelists/moderators at the conference. • Highly recommended Padma ShriDr. V. Mohan, M.D., FRCP (London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ireland), Ph.D., D.Sc., D.Sc (Hon. Causa), FNASc, FASc, FNA, FACP, FACE; Chairman & Chief Diabetologist, Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai as one of the speakers. • Dr Agarwal confirmed that the Online CME Credit proposal sent by ACP will be discussed with the CME Committee of Delhi Medical Council at their meeting on 18th September, 2014. Favourably inclined to it. Dr Mir also informed them that ACP could develop a customised product for online credits if so required. • Confirmed that at a stage of signing contract with BMJ for online CME Credits but that in no way should stop DMC for partnering with ACP.

This was followed by Q&A session. Discussion points: • Appreciative of lecture. Would welcome such lectures/workshops on specific topics in the future too. • Fortis has a nice ‘Meditorium’ that can seat 110 pax. Dr Mir discussed having a possible ‘Pre-Session on Gerontology’ at the Fortis Hospital, Gurgaon on 4th Sept. (a day prior to the 2014 Conference in Delhi). To involve Dr H.H Das and Dr Samir Parikh of the hospital in the sessions on Pain Management & Mental Health respectively. • Corporate membership packageto be considered. • ACP to revert with Institutional rate for subscription to Annalsof Medicine and MKSAP.

Dr Mir asked them to avail reduction on dues by giving references. • Welcomed idea of having 'updates' across sub specialties, at the Conference as also publication of the abstracts and posters. • All were willing to help with the Conference and gave consent to be on the Steering Committee. • Dr Behl suggested that Dr.Anoop Mishra, Director and Head, Department of Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, Fortis Hospitals, VasantKunj; President, National Diabetes Obesity & Cholesterol Foundation (N-DOC), President, Center for Diabetes Obesity & Cholesterol Disorders (C-DOC), Director, Diabetes Obesity & Metabolic Diseases, Diabetes Foundation (India) could be invited to talk on Diabetes and Obesity at the 2014 Conference in Delhi • Felt that ACP needs to ease the process of re-accreditation. Not easy for ACP Members in India to earn the required CME credits. • Areas of concern - ‘Ethics of Medical practice in India” and ‘Hospital Management”. Felt that ACP could consider a certification program that will help standardize/recognize competency levels; help bridge gaps in skill sets.

  48. Conclusion • Dr. Mir’s lectureswere well received. ACP Member Benefits highlighted before each lecture. Need to follow-up with e-mailers and posters to increase visibility of ACP in India and grow the membership as India needs 200 dues paying members to launch the India Chapter. • Great interest shown by Medical Colleges and Hospitals in the topic ‘Evaluation and Management of Sepsis 2013’ and ‘The Global Aging Tsunami (Gerontology)’. • Lectures held at only IMED approved Medical Colleges in each city as students of these colleges can become members for free. Members endorsed the idea that ACP should target the post graduate students as done in USA. • Member Dinners were fairly well attended though held on week days. Allowed for great interaction and gave a lot of insight on challenges and possible opportunities for ACP in India. Need to meet/engage with members on a quarterly basis. • Announcement of the forthcoming ACP conference to be held in New Delhi on 5-6 September 2014 has been well received. Dr Mir was able to put together a tentative ‘Scientific Committee’ and ‘Steering Committee’ for the same as also a tentative program based on discussions with members, physicians of the hospitals visited in the 3 cities.

  49. Conclusion – Contd. • Should partner/engage with API and Delhi Medical Council for a successful first conference in India. • Need to hold lecture series in Bangalore and Pune in February 2014 so one can increase awareness/visibility as regards ACP in these towns.
