  2. Fractional Distillation • How many substances do we have?

  3. How can we separate the two liquids??

  4. Fractional Distillation Lab Purpose: • Can we identify properties of a mixture of liquids? • Can we separate a mixture of liquids by boiling them (distillation)?

Procedure • Set up experiment the same as Boiling Pt Lab • Add 20 mLof substance & Boiling chips to test tube • Place 3 empty test tubes into water bath beaker • Place rubber hose end into empty test tube labeled  • Light burner with small flame and heat substance • Switching Test Tubes • Plateau at ……. for a few minutes in Test Tube  • Once temperature increases from plateau, switch to Test Tube   • Once 2nd plateau is reached at ………., switch to Test Tube   

Lab Conclusion • Can you tell just by looking at the Original Mixture liquid that it’s a mixture? • At what temperature did you switch collecting test tubes? • Can you identify the substances in the mixture? How did you know what they were? • Identify the liquids that were in the mixture. (Discuss using your data– complete 5 – 8 sentences)
