Forms of Government • Democracy: A form of government in which supreme authority rests with the people.
Forms of Democracy • Direct Democracy: all citizens meet in one place and make decisions/laws. • Representative Democracy: citizens elect representatives to make decisions. • Republic: AKA Representative Democracy, people consent to have elected reps. make decisions NOTE: In America we have a Democratic Republic or a Representative Democracy.
Forms of Government • Monarchy: A form of government ruled by a king or Queen.
Types of Monarchies • Limited monarchy: King/queen rules with an elected parliament (ex: England) • Constitutional monarchy: King/queen’s power is limited by a constitution written by the people • Absolute Monarchy: King/queen has ALL power and control.
Forms of Government Dictatorship: A form of government in which the leader has absolute power and authority.
Forms of Government • Oligarchy: A form of government in which the power to rule is held by a small, usually self-appointed elite.
Forms of Government • Anarchy: A social structure without government or law and order.
Forms of Government Theocracy: A government in which officials are regarded as divinely inspired (appointed by God).
Forms of Government • Aristocracy: A form of government in which power is held by noble or privileged class.
Forms of Government • Totalitarianism: A form of government in which individuals are subordinated to the state and in which the government has strict control of all aspects of life.
Varying Economies • Capitalism: economic system where individuals privately own goods, property and businesses. The $$ you have is based on what you earn. • Socialism: common ownership of all goods. Government controls SOME goods/property and distributes equally to the people (ex: Cuba). • Communism:equal ownership and distribution of all goods and property. Power is shared equally by all. Usually, government controls ALL major economic decisions.
